Amex BA-Application Appeal

Hello everyone! Pretty new to the forum...I would like to know your experience with Amex! I applied recently for a BA Amex credit card and I was declined after a message telling me that further checks needed to be made! I called the customer service next morning in order to ask them if I can send them any documentation to support my application...but I was informed that I had been declined anyway! So after receiving the letter with the decision, I decided to sent an appeal with supportive documentation (bank statement and certified identification). The first application was made on the 4th of April and a credit check was record in my Experian profile. I checked today and I saw another soft inquiry this time that was made on Friday 22nd of April on my Experian profile. Does this mean that they have considered my appeal? Do you think I have chances to be accepted and overturn the initial decision?

Thanks

Did you run the soft check prior to applying?

This generally gives you a idea of your chances, Amex is one of the most stringent when it comes to issuing cards

I've appealed an AMEX decline last year. They did another search on my credit report. Got a standard letter stating 'We've considered the information provided and looked at your report and our decision stands, declined'.

    They are quite strict, apparently.

To be honest I didn't find an eligibility checker within Amex website...do you know where can I do a soft check for Amex ?

Why this particular card ? Unless you're going to spend over £20k pa on it (to earn the partner ticket) and are looking at a particular reward flight with good availability you're unlikely to win with it.

Yes that's true...I just would like to begin from somewhere with Amex.... But I guess I should start with their basic card...if I apply now they will certainly reject me even for the basic card isn't it?

  • It may be easier to apply and be accepted for a basic green card, or maybe one of their nectar or cashback products.

Pure speculation on my part but it's possible that as these cards are arguably a bit more targeted towards the mass-market, and their acceptance criteria and risk scoring may be slightly more lenient for these products.

In my experience these airline branded cards are often more skewed towards high spending "premium" customers and are harder to get for some people - and as others have mentioned, Amex are already fairly tough.

I applied for amex ba card, when it was offered to me constantly on ba.com website. I applied and I got declined. I've applied for this year for amex platinum cashback and got accepted. The difference between then and now is higher disposable income and a mortgage, instead of rented location. I guess they calculate and pick only customers who will spend enough to meet their criteria. Do note that my first credit card when i was still a university student was with Lloyds, and it was a dual mastercard & amex. Their current offering with Avios is quite good - you get decent earnings rate on amex, and have mastercard as a backup, and unlike "ba amex", lloyds avios card does not charge foreign transaction fees. Look into that one.

It's not an obsession...I just want Amex to get to know me as a customer in order to be able to have their rewards card (e.g the gold one). But I guess I should have made an application for their basic card first. It would be my first card...so I don't have that much credit history regarding credit cards. I applied for Lloyds Avios duo card and I was instantly accepted with 5000£ limit. That will do the work :)
