Slough which is walking distance (about 30 mins) to the beautiful Eton and Windsor (which are a bit more expensive to rent). If you are the southern side of Slough you have the amazing park of Eton College Grounds by the banks of the river Thames on your way into Eton or Windsor as well as The Jubilee River walks. There is also another park called Herschel Park.

The train station has regular trains to Paddington and the fast train takes you there in 15 minutes!! There is a giant Tesco superstore right next to the train station and further up the road a Sainsbury's superstore.

You can get to Heathrow in 20 mins driving or take the train or bus direct there - lots of people living and working at Heathrow live in Slough, Datchet, Eton, Windsor.

As you walk through the College grounds from Slough you may pass the Thames Valley Athletics Centre on the Datchet Road, it also has a gym and steam room and has classes etc.

I've been in this area for five years having moved from Devon - it really is the best of both worlds - a great mix of rural and town facilities with easy access to London and Heathrow. I'm not in Slough itself and you would have to be happy in a multi cultural world as it is very much that there and this is reflected in the difference in rental prices. If you'd prefer it a bit more quintessentially English then Windsor and Eton are your best bet but they are more expensive and you can get trains to London Waterloo which take about 40 minutes. I'd live here forever if i could afford to buy a place!

I've heard some pretty nasty things about Slough, but I haven't actually been there myself yet so will reserve judgement until I visit. Are there any particular areas of Slough you would recommend/avoid in terms of living?

Agree with much of the suggestions. Bedford/Flitwick and Milton Keyes are handy for Luton airport.
Sutton /Cheam and thereabouts handy for Gatwick/Heathrow. Sutton has large Morrisons, Asda.

Redhill in Surrey. Town had Saintsbury's plus usual high Street shops. Leisure centre with pool ,gym etc .Town has a park.Bit to far from countryside. Plus not too far from Gatwick or the coast. Large bus station, and trains to London.

Looks like Greenwich/Blackheath is in that price range, in which case, something like this:-

If you need to travel into central London regularly then you also need to take the fares into consideration. There are areas of Bromley/Beckenham that would tick all your boxes, only 20 mins to Victoria, but rents are likely to be more like £950.

To add to Cornucopia's post, no gyms in Abbey Wood as far as I know, but one in Woolwich, just two stops down the line.

Of course HS2 will open Birmingham up too, although not sure you'd get anywhere close enough walking distance to the station...

Edit: And although they claim otherwise, I wouldn't be surprised if the currently swift service from Rugby becomes slower, once focus is on the HS2 line.
  • I would say Woking. 23 minutes to Waterloo, Sainsburys 1 minute from train station. Morrisons 10 minutes in the area which is nice and quiet (Goldsworth Road area). Plus you would get to live near me. What a treat!
