Its rather drastic to close your account over this.
I did 25 years ago. Never dealt with Natwest since and never will.

Can't you just change your Direct Debits all to Tuesday then you won't have to worry about it happening again.

Or you can switch to TSB and keep a £2000 buffer in the account earning interest which would probably be better.

Debiting Monday direct debits to the account during the weekend is normal practice. However, the transactions are dated Monday and therefore the money is not actually taken early, just the balance that you see (and the available funds) reduced.
I would point out that, in not letting you make the purchase, your bank actually did you a favour as if there were insufficient funds for you to make the purchase at the time, had the direct debits not have been pre-debited and you had made the purchase, there would have then been insufficient funds to have actually paid the direct debits in the very early hours of Monday morning which could have had consequences far worse than your being unable to make the purchase using your debit card.
I will also repeat that it is very foolish to have over £1200 of direct debits going out from your account on the very same day that you receive your salary.

Where do I say that I want compensation? I take people's point about the pay/direct debit dates and this is a lesson I've learnt but to take money early from my account is not right. Fact.
Banks are quick to charge you when you do something wrong so why shouldn't I challenge this?

This is not the first issue I've had with Natwest BTW.

    Santander account opened, transfer underway:j

What date were the d/d's taken (as shown on your bank statement)?
