Weekend loading

Options
This is my first post......I'm livid!
I have a current account with Natwest. Yesterday I tried to use my card to make a payment in a shop but it was declined. I then checked my account to find I was £600 od. The previous day I was £600 in credit. I went in to my branch to learn that my direct debits due to leave my account on Monday had been taken early. The manager said it was because of something called weekend pre-loading????
Basically, the money has come out of my account early ( I get paid om Monday by the way so the account should always have been in credit)
Has anyone else had this happen to them? It' s not right is it?
I've logged a complaint with the bank and am in the process of closing my account.

Quite common, some banks pre grab the amounts, some dont.

I'm sure someone will be along with what banks don't :)

Empathy for you, what a pain in the bottom!

NatWest have always done that. Used to be quite useful when I was younger and usually skint as getting paid on Monday meant my salary was available to withdraw on Saturdays.

OP do you get paid by BACS?
If so your pay should have shown as being credited a well as direct debits been taken?
  • Yes money goes in by bacs but isn't in my account until Monday. I'm switching to Santander.

If you switch to the 123, that costs you £5 a month. Have you considered alternatives lie TSB Plus or Tesco that cost nothing and pay more interest than Santander?

Leaving such a small time frame between being paid and spending is never a good idea anyway, Not sure what you expect from the bank if this is the normal procedure that they work to why complain ? , Are you hoping for recompense to the tune of £600.00 here ?

If you are closing your account then that is sufficient and time to move on instead of trying to money grab from the bank for no apparent reason.
  • I am with santander and i have seen the same thing happen with my account, its not that unusual imo

Nationwide only do it at the weekend for any internal transfers e.g. to regular savers. Direct debits get deferred to the Monday.
    Ethical moneysaver
  • From what I remember from previous posts, I'm pretty sure Natwest would allow you to withdraw the funds as cash if you needed them. I'm not sure where a complaint will get you as the manager should know this so you're not being prevented from accessing your money. If they didn't then you might have something of a case.

As Jones mentioned above, today's pay would've shown as available on the Saturday.

So for arguments sake on the thursday you had £600 then on the friday you were £600 overdrawn does this mean you have £1200 of direct debits coming out of your account at roughly the same time?
or do you mean you have a balance of £0.00 when you checked your account. Its rather drastic to close your account over this, if anything switch it and get some bonus along the way.
