A bit of background: I've had problems with my mobile phone since I got it 18 months ago. It will receive emails but won't let me reply/send them (sticks in the Outbox).
I've made numerous calls to the Virgin helpline and despite various operators trying to resolve the issue (factory reset, sending phone back etc.) wit no success until this week when they suggested that it wouldn't work because my virgin.net email address is to be disconnected.
I thought that was an unlikely reason (more fobbing off as I'd had before) as it works perfectly well on my PC but as an experiment I added a gmail account, tried a test message and it worked! Unfortunately all my contacts have my virgin.net address so changing it will be a huge hassle.
I'm told that since being bought out by Talk Talk an email was sent out a year ago to say that virgin.net addresses would be disconnected. I was aware of that but have heard nothing since, no reminders, nothing in the media, none of my friends on virgin.net are aware of it, no recent publicity of any sort that I'm aware of. The operator wouldn't say when this was happening other than the email went out a year ago to say it was happening in a year's time.
I'll admit I'm not technology minded, I just use my phone and PC in the same way as I drive my car but wouldn't know how to fix a problem with it. That, sadly, leaves me vulnerable to being told any old rubbish so I hoped more techn savvy people on here might be able to help.
So my questions are:

So my questions are:
- has anyone got an update on what's happening with virgin.net email addresses?
- is it a plausible reason why I can send messages on my PC but not my phone?
- if I do need a new email address would it be a good idea to use gmail as if I have to change I don't want to have to do it again any time soon

Sorry but that just takes me to A Google page with various Virgin sites on it. What exactly am I looking for?0 -
So well after a year after being informed that you would lose your virgin.net email you now find that it was not very sensible to ignore the email that you admit to receiving! Why should they remind you after informing you that it would cease to be! Why did you do nothing!

Switch away from the pathetic TalkTalk, it is always sensible to use a non ISP email e.g. gmail, yahoo etc. etc.0 -

I suppose I deserved that for straying away from the supportive, helpful threads I usually frequent.
I happen to think that a single email about something that has potentially such a huge impact is insufficient.
Thanks for your confirmation that a non ISP email is a good choice.
Have you a view as to whether the forthcoming loss of the virgin.net address is causing the problems on my phone? Or is that more carp?0 -

I would guess that the send settings may be incorrect on your mobile and have always been, so coincidence.
This website here gives the SMTP settings required for most mobiles and email servers:
Accessing the email setup options on mobiles is different, so you may need to look at the user manual to check the SMTP setting.0 -

Thank you so much for your help.
Having read the various links about the email address, it's possible that if we had a media package we might be able to keep it. I'm really not interested in masses of TV channels but I'll look into whether there's a way.0 -
What 'huge hassle' is involved in changing your email address? 2 minutes to send a bcc to everyone in your address book, maybe an hour or two to log into your various online accounts and change the address. Certainly less time than you've spent phoning VM or posting on here.
Taking out an unwanted TV subscription just to keep your email address is absurd. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

No idea why you need to be so sharp.
Most of my time hasn't been spent trying to avoid changing my email but getting it to work on my phone. Although I admit to not being knowledgeable I'd have expected that the Virgin helpline would be the place to go. Obviously I was wrong.
Of course I won't buy a package I don't want but I think the TIVO box might be a good replacement for my old box.0
