A hole in the inner layer of the cavity wall under the stairs that had been stuffed with newspaper and plastered and papered over.

We found similar behind the pipes in the bathroom. It was a local newspaper from 1952 and, coincidentally, in the property ads, there was one for the last two houses on the cul de sac we lived in.

These semis were listed at £2 200 each.

We circled the ad, copied the page, and when we sold the house for around 150x the original price, it went into the pack with the boiler manual etc. :)
  • There was a rumour that the house was linked to some "great big crime" in the past. I was told the story by somebody who'd done some handyman work for the previous owner about 20 years before. He said he'd been in the garden and the two old ladies next door had spoken to him to ask him if he'd found anything in the loft - and they said they didn't know what, if it were 'treasure' or proceeds of a big crime, or a map showing where they'd buried the loot ... they weren't more forthcoming than that and the handyman never found anything .... but I wonder if there's something hidden there still .... and what it might have been.

Have you had any floorboards up yet Pastures?:rotfl: You never know what you might find under them I guess....

what things did you find out about the house after you moved in?

....that every single floor was rotten and had to be replaced.. the rotten kitchen floor was discovered by the widow fitter falling through it

.....in the house I lived in in Spain, that the stair treads were filled with almond shells and that a (supporting) wall was made from adobe (sand)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

... way more space than expected. Someone plasterboarded over walls, chimneybreast, ceiling of the attic room with at least 1ft of empty space left to the original wall/ceiling (no insulation material, just empty space).

Under the carpets - some of the 100yo original tiles of fireplaces long gone, awww.

Broken windowsills the missing wood replaced with a cover of thin MDF. Slipped tiles on the roof, crumbling plaster - basically what we had been expecting. And greeting cards from the previous owners (no, not to us unfortunately) :D

Swastikas painted on all the walls in dark varnish then wallpapered over. I had to get the whole house skimmed to get rid of 'em!!
