The vendors had left me a very nice bottle of wine. :)

Plus the wall paper looked a lot fattier when the pictures had come down so I couldn't leave the redecorating as originally planned.

    .... a Picasso in the loft ..... (I wish)!!!!!
Just dreaming .... isn't it funny how once you've committed to the purchase you suddenly see all the things that you should have noticed before .....

Some years ago, we had moved out of our worst purchase to date within six months ....

    ...blocked drains.

18 months on and we've just dug up an old stoneware bottle which is prob not worth anything but appears to date from the 1870's so it's not all bad :)

My friends just moved to a new house and found a massive stash of porography in the loft, and I mean massive! I'd post a picture but this is a family site.

No cavity wall insulation, minimal loft insulation, plumbing problems, leaking pipe in the garage
But hey got the first two fixed without spending any money - greendeal! and the other when I had to change the hotwater cylinder (catastrophic DIY failure)

Bought the property without doing a full building report. Saw the building report from 2009 afterwards. OMG. Void in the living room floor, detorated conservatory, amateur electric work, low water pressure, shower thermostat issues, poor lead flashing work, poorly built loft door (it actually fell off and flew down the stairs), and other minor cosmetics. I'm slowly working my way through the building report so that it passes next time with no major issues.

I renovate property for a living and buy dilapidated so don't be alarmed if your about to take the plunge ...

gas leak under the floor, we did wonder why it was capped at the meter ...
rising damp wallpapered over and painted with eggshell just before putting up for sale to disguise it...
a large hole in the wall covered with a moose head barometer (honestly)...
loads of !!!! in the lofts - funnily enough nothing worth much ....
car parts in the long grass and all around the garden ....
botched wiring that works but isn't safe ....
a landing socket that didn't work - actually no wiring to it whatsoever, just screwed to the wall (to look good or did they think it would work?)

A nice steel shed left in the garden which we discovered after hacking back the undergrowth... followed by a decomposing wooden shed further back in the undergrowth... followed by an almost totally decomposed potting shed even further back in the overgrowth.

Essentially we discovered loads of things that lazy barstewards can't be bothered to deal with.
  • In our previous house they left fish - we found their Koi Carp in the pond and had to get rid of them.

Luckily I knew someone, who knew someone with fish ponds.
