    Is it Melbourne or Sydney?

    Good, it's a great city.

BTW Melbourne also has another airport Avalon AVN with Jetstar flights, may be useful for weekend trips.

Thanks that's handy. First priority is obviously finding a place to rent. Feels very daunting as we stayed in Carlton North and although we visited St Kilda we didn't really spend much time anywhere else (we walked around Fitzroy and central Melbourne as well).

Can't say anything about NY, never been there. But as an ex-pat Pom I would take Sydney over Melbourne any day. I find Melbourne parochial and dull, (and I live in Canberra!)

I'd think anyone who chooses to live in Canberra over either Sydney or Melbourne is probably looking at a different set of criteria however......but it's all opinion anyway :)

As for renting - something like an airbnb room or apartment for a couple of weeks might give you some breathing space when you first arrive and are flat hunting especially as you will want to scope out particular neighbourhoods.

Put NY at the top of your bucket list, it's a great place.

Agreed. i had no choice in Canberra, I married an Aussie who already lived here. It's a f-a-a-a-r better place than anyone imagines it to be,. (But we keep that quiet, don't tell anyone...)
