Terminal illness

Hi

My dad has recently been diagnosed with a terminal illness, with only months left. He owes 14k on an mbna credit card, what will happen with this? He has no assets, and very little in the bank. Most of his state pension goes on repayments. Myself and my mother are additional card holders on his account. Would it be wise to remove ourselves? What happens if he stops paying the minimum payments now, he is worried about paying for funeral costs etc.

Any advice I would be grateful.

Yourself and your Mum being additional cardholders is not relevant - he is the account holder and only he is liable for the debt. However, it would probably be fraudulent for you to use your cards after his death.

In simple terms, the card provider would have a claim against you Father's estate. If there isn't enough money there to pay it, then that's their tough luck.

I believe funeral costs can be paid first, before having to consider any other debts your Father may have.

If he isn't claiming already, he can get health-related benefits automatically under the special rules -

The extra money may make life easier for him and your mother during these last months.

Also DWP funeral cost help may be available, put his mind at ease in his final months instead of worrying about it https://www.gov.uk/funeral-payments/overview

I wonder what would happen if he were to buy a funeral plan on the credit card... Seeing as the debt would get written off when he died if he has no assets...

I don't think he'd be allowed to take out a funeral plan, given his situation.

I'm in a similair situ, my father also has terminal illness (cancer) - he owes 9k on 2 cards...
card 1 - him main - mother as an additional card holder
    card 2 - just him

If you can get a letter off your gp saying xx has xx (terminal illness) this would be enough to put the account on hold (you and mum would not be able to use the card)

When dad passes - any insurances etc - need to pay for funeral, then debts - if no money in the pot - credit cards would get wrote off, they can not come after you and mum (as long as you are only additional card holders ) the account needs to be in your dads name.

If dad is under 65 - then you will recieve a funeral grant (apr 2k) if dad over 65, you would need to apply to the DHSS,

SOnt know what age dad is - if under 65 apply for Pip, over 65 apply fr attendance allowance, - if dad has less than 6 mths - apply under special rules - means your forms get processed quicker.

If u need anything pm me x

Thinking ahead - check out for your mother what she can claim (depending on her age and any benefits claimed now) -

Most people find the weeks after a death very difficult so anything you can learn about or sort out in advance will make things easier.
