how to get a 3m run of countertop home

Options
Our old hob just died and we have bought a new one. This needs a new countertop as it is different size from old one (actually old one was 4 domino hobs.). We have a very long run of counter there - 2050mm - so need long run of top. Crrent top is quite old and replacement not widely available but we have tracked some down to a builders merchants 8 miles away. The problem is , it only comes in 3m lengths and they do not deliver. It is too large to get in our car. any innovative ideas on how to get it home?

Take a hand saw and cut it down to 2100mm in their car park, that can be accomodated in most cars with driver only in car.

Or you could try to borrow roof bars and strap a couple of 3 x 2s along it then take the whole length.

3rd option is as per option 1 but take the wife along to saw the worktop and put her on the roof to come home, my preferred option.;););):rotfl:
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
  • I'm sure your local man with a van could do it or even your local taxi company will have a suitable vehicle.
I live 8 miles from our local main Town and a taxi costs between £11-12.
  • Hi,

can the joiner who is fitting it for you collect it on day of job?

As others have said, I'd either look at whoevers fitting it ( if it's not yourself) to pick it up or otherwise cut it roughly to size at the builders merchants with a handsaw...If you ask nicely they may even do this for you before you come and get it.

that is other problem. So far have contacted 3 local fitters (with job details - also need chb pipes boxed in and small bookshelf for cook books). So far, none have bothered to respond not even sorry not available . Thought might speed things up to have materials on site but that does not seem to be an incentive either...... About to post separate message looking for recommendations.

Are the merchants not able to cut it to size for you?

Homebase did this for me a few years ago.

    Contacted by Email? text?

    If so, that's your reason.

    Try ringing them.

OK made contact with a fitter who came round but his van is not large enough for the countertop either. He is relying on us to collect it. OH is no dab hand with any tools, not even a saw so no chance of trimming in car park. Builders merchants is Builders Depot who say clearly on their website that they do not deliver countertops, it is collect only.

So resigned to going over there (on public transport) as it is a nightmare on the roads round there, to check it is suitable, and if so, buy and place on reserve. Then find local man with a flat bed truck to collect it.

have you tried a specialist worktop supplier? They may have the correct to and will cut it to length for you.
