used caravan purchased on site

hi im looking for some advice i purchased an onsite static caravan on 2nd april paid part cash and cc.Gas and electricity checks included in purchase and site fees.I have complained several times about the gas fire and get fobed off that it has had a gas safty check i do have the paper work for the gas check but have not been given one for electricity check.I have asked again for the fire to be checked but to be checked when i am there.they said they would get another gas fitter they use to check it on monday or tuesday.
I have looked at another caravan same model year and fire etc on the site and the owner was good enough to turn there fire on for a comparison and the diferance is outstanding.
What are my options if the gas fitter who comes monday/tuesday says the fire is ok and i am still not happy. The site rules state you can only use firms that are on there aproval list. When i was there they phoned the other gas fitter and did tell him that the gas had the safty check with there other aproved gas fitter and that customer was still unhappy.
sorry its a long post.

So what's the problem with the fire?
There's a similar thread here if it's not heating up
    https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/4291329
Though this seems to be an older fire?
  • Hey steven,

It sounds to me like your mistaking a safety check and a service?

    Safety check -
This would consist of making sure there was no gas leaks/ damage or risk to your health. He wouldnt be checking the performance of the heater.

    Service -
This is where someone may strip the equipment down clean and change any parts to improve performance.

*(i don't know about gas heaters)

the fire lights but when on maximum the flames are no more that half inch high you have to kneel down to make sure the fire has lit.there is a 12month warranty with the caravan ( 12 month warranty of major appliances applies from handover date ) i have tested the fire by leaving it on overnight the elements do not turn red/orange after being left on full.So where do i stand
with this is it down to them to fix or not.Wouldnt the safty check have shown this. Also shouldnt this have been checked and noticed b4 the handover
    thanks for the replies
  • I'm sorry i can't be of more help.

The gas guy should be able to sort it as it just sounds like a issue with the gas flow regulation. possibly needs a clean or a new part to regulate gas flow?

hopefully the issue will be sorted not at your expense!

As a total novice have you checked your gas bottle levels, I imagine if the pressure is low you would get this issue. (try trace the pipe back to source check all valves are fully open?).

thanks for that there are 2 x 45kg gas bottles both supplied on the date of purchase i have used very little as i purchased 2x electric oil filled radiators as it was so cold and the fire made no impresion i have been using microwave toaster etc so very little gas has been used.I do hope they sort it i have complained over 3 times about it prior to seeing another fire working i also said on this friday that it may just be an adjustment that is needed but there responce was if the gas check is ok its nothing to do with them.So i did get a little peeved at the responce from them.

There might be some confusion about what you're asking for/expecting.

Going just by your "I bought a caravan" I'd assume that you're the owner.
Going by the "gas ... checks" I'd assume that's just a safety check. A safety check does not mean it's efficient/working well, just that it's safe.

As an owner I'd expect to be having to fund my own gas fire repairs and/or replacement. But as a new owner, do you have any guarantees on what you bought?

It seems it's possible you're confusing gas checks with servicing -and- possibly trying to get the site to pay for things that are the owner's responsibility.

A bit of clarification might help some people who are a bit confused.

    as i already stated
there is a 12month warranty with the caravan as i stated in other post ( 12 month warranty of major appliances applies from handover date )
handover date was 2nd april .I have stated to the sellers on several occations that the fire is not working as it should and there responce is
the safty check says its ok.Im no expert but am willing to have the fire checked by someone else if the gas presure to the fire is low how accurate is the gas safty check as a new owner i would expect everything to have been checked ie that the fire is working as it should.the cooker and boiller are ok.
If you have a gas fire on the lowest setting that is what this gas fire is like on highest setting. The white bars you have going across the radiants on full the flame is on the lowest bar and not a blue flame its clear thats why i have to kneel on the floor to see if its lit or not.Maybe i should also add this isnt purchased from a private seller it is from the site sales.

Have you googled the site to see if there any other problems with them?

Having worked at a caravan park, my first hunch would be the regulator that goes onto the gas bottles, second hunch that the bottles are empty (one of your fellow tenants may have swapped their empties for your full bottles?), third some blockage in the fire itself...

If there's a new gas guy coming, tell him your problem that the pressure seems really low, see what he says. For instance he may try the stove and find plenty of flow there, so identify the fire as at fault, or he may smack a stuck regulator with a spanner and the whole world comes good again ;-)

I have checked the gas bottles and the one that it has been running on seems almost full the other one feels full ive put an outside storage box next to the gas bottles and attached a chain from that to the caravan and padlocked it i think when i go back tomorrow ill loop the chain through the bottles thanks for the tip..Regarding the gas stove there isnt any problem with that ive even lit the gas rings to warm the place up.The regulators are also suposed to be new.Its just annoying that they just say the gas safety has been done and its all ok when i keep telling them the fire is not working as it should ive even told them the flame is that low i have to kneel down on the floor to see that its lit even then its hard to see the flame. The fitter they are getting is the other of the 2 that they aprove of they couldnt give a time or day just monday or tuesday so i shall go there sunday evening and just have to wait it out.I dont like complaining and im also worried that they might just think im a pain in the butt and make things uncomfortable for me in the future.I like the site and the caravan thats why i bought it there.I have health problems and need somewhere to relax without feeling any stress but the attitude of the way they reacted when i said i have a complaint was slightly over agresive.I first mentioned it to them within days of the handover and they said all caravan fires are like that they didnt even come to see it for themselves.
