It may be waiting for a reboot...
That did it! I restarted my computer and there were eight updates waiting to be installed. (still not sure why I had to reboot to be able to see waiting updates).
However updates now successfully installed and peace of mind restored.
Thank you very much grumpycrab, you're a pal.

It may have installed 1 (or more) updates during the reboot.
If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.

Oh dear the problem is back! :(
No Windows updates to Vista since 10th May.
I've tried rebooting a few times but so far no joy.
    Any help appreciated.

Set it up to scan for Windows Updates, and leave your machine on overnight (if not longer) running something like Mouse Jiggler to ensure it doesn't go to sleep.

Microsoft updates are released on the 2nd Tuesday of the month (commonly called patch Tuesday). Wait a week (well, a week and a day, as they go on US time not UK time) and you'll likely have some.
    Don't fret now though.

Sad to say, but no sign of new Windows Vista updates. Aside from doing the mouse jiggler thing suggested by John Gray, I can't think of anything else to do, apart from taking my laptop into my computer repair shop, unless any members can suggest any other steps I can take to retrieve any updates that might be out there.
    Thank you.

A computer shop is likely to reinstall the operating system for which they may charge an hour's labour. I would get them to quote for putting Windows7 on. It may not be much more expensive. Or if you want them to fix the problem agree a maximum cost. EDIT: backup all important data first if going to a shop.

I rang my preferred computer shop before, they've fixed my laptop before. The guy I spoke to didn't seem unduly concerned, he said because Vista is coming to the end of its natural life, there aren't many updates currently being released, and they tend to be definition updates for Windows Defender.
I thought well, he's the expert and I'm happy to accept his expert opinion, and, in any event I have Kaspersky Internet Security 2016 installed on my laptop, so do I need Windows Defender Updates?
So what do you think, does his explanation sound plausible, or do you think he may have been trying to fob me off?

Assuming Kaspersky is up-to-date, no you don't need Defender (real-time Defender protection should be disabled for obvious reason). No point in spending money unnecessarily.

Vista runs fine if fully patched and you have 2GB memory. If it does what you want it do do, keep it as it is.
