Hi all,
We have a garage similar to attached pic and the roof (presumably asbestos) is starting to seriously leak and you can see daylight through the cracks.
Obviously the roof needs replacing. I contacted a nationwide specialist firm and got a quote of around £1500. Any thoughts on whether this is about right or is that a rip off? Also any thoughts on the best material to replace with?
Many thanks!

It's a bit of a botch job, but could you paint over it with something like this ?

It kept my old flat roof going for years in my first house until I could afford to get it re-done properly.0 -
Thanks consumers revenge
Ebe - I thought about that but the cracks are so bad don't think it will achieve much and I don't really fancy climbing around on it. Not planning on moving for quite a while so its probably worth investing in a proper job.0 -

Was that to remove the old roof and dispose as well.?
We have just had a quote of £700 to just get rid of the roof.0 -
I think I am going to have the same problem in the next year or so. Am I right in thinking that it costs more to have an asbestos roof removed because it is hazardous & needs careful handling & disposal?0

Yes although you can do it yourself.
Our Council gives advice on their website about this and with ours they will take away a small amount free once a year or you can pay them to collect more.0 -
My local council allow householders to take asbestos to the amenity tip providing that it is double wrapped in plastic as sealed with tape and this is free of charge.
Businesses however have to pay to dispose of asbestos and to transport and get rid of it they need to be licensed.
If you do decide to do it yourself, make sure that you wear some disposable overalls and an approved asbestos dust mask and it's best to dampen all of the panels before proceeding.
Personally, I would prefer to pay an approved company to do it for me.0 -

Our council will not allow us to do that, they will only collect it.
OH is considering doing it himself as £700 is such a lot of money and if he follows the advice given by the council he should be ok.
We will get some more quotes and then decide.0 -
Probably best to DIY - as long as you take sensible precautions it should be OK. IIRC the real problems were caused for people handling this stuff regularly. A one off job should be fairly low risk.0
