I switched from Lloyds to Santander a couple of weeks ago. Opened the account online on the Saturday, and opted for the switching service, and I was informed that all would be complete by the following Friday. Got my debit card, pin number, cheque book and all DDs and SOs done by the Friday. Santander kept me updated via emails and text messages. Excellent service - no horror stories here :o
They managed to complete the 7-day CASS process in 5 working days? That's pretty impressive!

If anyone is thinking about switching to a Santander current account, only one cashback site that I am aware of is currently offering an incentive. :money:

    Hi,
I'm currently with HSBC and would like to switch to Santender 123 (as a main current account), but I'm thinking of keeping my HSBC account for a bit. To do so, I'll still need to pay 500pounds a month in my HSBC account.
I was thinking keeping my income going into my HSBC account (so i still pay the minimum amount) and then setting up an automatic transfer every month to transfer this same income into the santender account.
Could I still do this if I use the switching service: using it for all my direct debits but not for my income?
  • I switched to Santander to get the 3% interest, part of the switching process, is closing the old account.
I wanted to keep the old Natwest account, I have had it nearly 30 years & have a £5k overdraft facility (not used).
I went online & opened a new Natwest account, added some DD's & switched that instead. It all went through fine & the DD's were transferred.
I still use my Natwest accounts & the Santander account is used for savings.

Some banks offer to transfer your DDs only but there is no guarantee for such switches, and Santander don't offer partial switches.

It is not hard to switch your DDs yourself. It's best done immediately after a DD has been paid as the payee will need several working days to update their systems. Many payees will let you change your bank details online or on the phone. You can also check that the DD appears in your new bank account, and has disappeared from your old bank account.

The switching service does not include the account opening process. Sadly this fact is being ignored in the Marketing hype about 7-day switching and many people don't investigate it enough to find out.

Right, so I need to request the account first, have it setup then ask for the switch ? Thanks

Some banks allow you to specify during the application process that you want to switch. I don't know whether Santander do. I do know that no bank guarantees that you will have received your card, PIN, online access etc within 7 days from being accepted. You might get lucky if you apply in Branch but the Switch Guarantee does not extend to having a fully usable account

Why switch, just open a new Santy account and set up payments and DD's manually.

i applied for the account online & requested the full switching service all at the same time. received notification shortly after from smile that the switch had been requested, contact them if i wanted to cancel, all other correspondence was from santander to advise where in the process we were & when completed.

You describe the normal switch process. This process does not include getting online access, debit card and PIN.
