The Economics of Brexit: What Next

I hear that there is a referendum going on at present as to whether the UK should remain in the EU or do something else.

This news has recently reached Australia and it transpires that I, despite living in a mere colony, am able to vote in this referendum.

I understand that HM Queen's Government has circulated a flier informing us of the benefits of the EU but sadly as I live a 9 week boat journey away I will not be able to base my decision on HMQ's received wisdom.

Normally I would simply vote in line with the Queen's representatives of the Mother Country but in this case it seems particularly important to understand all views.

Can anyone explain what the UK plans to do regarding economic policy after leaving the EU if such a thing comes to pass please?

We in the colonies would be grateful for such an insight.

According to HM Govt after a vote for Brexit we will all be too busy avoiding the rain of blood and plagues of Locusts for economic policy to be an over-riding concern.

However in order to inject some balance, some of those in favour of Brexit suggest that the only relevant economic policies will be those pertaining to milk and honey.

We will forge new (but same) treaties under new (but better) British bureaucracy to trade on our (but not so different) terms with all nations (probably not) resulting in decades of peaceful living with no-one with unpronounceable names like Szymon coming into our houses, doing our loft conversions.

Gen, you are living in the country that will be our main trading partner post Brexit, and apparently you are all straining at the leash to be able to trade with the Mother country instead of those pesky Chinese and other Asian nations that you have been forced to interact with ever since we let our Empire fall into disrepair.

Well that all sounds awesome (as in I am filed will awe).

Is there perhaps a link to a website that we colonials could see what the plan is for the next phase of the revolution? I'm yet to see one.

We're going to drift off into irrelevance, we wont be able to co-operate across borders on anything, we wont be able to trade with others, and as we'll have our own seat as Australia does on the global bodies we'll have no influence - you ought to know this given your dwelling in an irrelevant inward looking independent nation!

I know, I hear ya, yes we're the 5th largest economy, in the G7 and G20, a core member of the UN and NATO and member of the 5 Eyes system, and a nuclear power, but we're doomed to irrelevance

The Aussies hated the Japs long after WW2, but they have a trade deal...
