    Good morning newfoundglory

There's already some really good information here on the thread so thank you guys.

I was just wondering, do you have the start reads from when you moved in? I know you said 'at check-in the off-peak reading was over 6 times the day time reading' but do you have a note of them?

I do actually agree with ToomanyPies, you really need to be able to read your meter, this is the only way we can bill you to accurate reads, as our meter readers are only obliged to come once every two years (although they may come more often)

Can you speak to the management company and agree a time to take reads once a month? You can then pop them on to your online account and produce a real time bill or balance.

I also noted you say 'I'm just on EON's standard non-contract Economy 7' have you checked to see if there is a better tariff for you? Ours are on our website, but you can always use one of the comparison sites to get a full picture.

Please just shout up if I can be of any more help.

    Helena :)

Hello everyone, I now have access to my electricity meter!

It seems i'm using over 80% of my elec at night. Currently on 200kwh day and 1400kwh night readings.

Looking at my last estimated bill, it says I'm paying 16.67p during the day, 6.79p at night and 15.64p standing charge.

This does not match the EON EnergyPlan on the website. In fact, it seems cheaper than both the 1 and 2 year fixes listed as well. Any ideas whats going on here?
  • Just make sure you are looking at YOUR meter and don t be fooled by some sticker on the meter which says it is yours.Do some sort of on/off test with a mate with a mobile to doubly make sure. We always find many mess ups in meter cupboards because originally they may have been listed as plot numbers then later given the actual flat number by someone in a yellow hard hat with a hangover ! The more electric you use the faster the little red light flashes so if you switch the kettle on it will start to flash pretty fast then slow right down when it switches off.

I tested it with a kettle on Friday, put it on went down and after a few minutes it stopped flashing. I did that because when I first got the key the red light was stuck on all the time, even through I wasn't using much elec at that point. After googling I later discovered that was probably anti-creep. I've checked the meter serials with EON several times and its definitely mine, matches with the bill too.

Ok, thats good. One last little check is to make sure the suppliers bill you the right way round. Our meter readers at G4S will routinely just enter any old reading into their handhelds which may well result in the night rate being billed day rate prices. Usually rate 1 is the day rate on a digital meter but not always, it could just as well been given rate 2..T is the total of the two rates.Meters usually default to display the rate in progress. If you view it in the day hours it will show the day reading. They are fixed at GMT so will be an hour out in BST, i.e. night rate will start at around 1.30 am if its 12.30 to 7.30 eco 7 in your area

It was advancing the 200 reading the other day so must be the right way around.
After I take away the move-in readings, night usage is nearer 90% of my total. I think this is because, as you say, off-peak is until 8.30am during summer.
If I get up at 7 or 7.30, put the hot water on, boil kettles, washing machine, microwave the whole lot must be coming off-peak. No need for any lights in the evening as its summer.

    Hello newfoundglory

Already some great advice on here. Thanks all. Thought I'd pop on and let you know, the prices you've put are without VAT. The Energy Plan prices on our website are inclusive of VAT. As Helena said, we've other tariffs available and for a full picture pop your usage in kWh on to the independent comparison sites.

With our Economy 7 tariffs, to be cost effective, you need to use a significant amount of electricity during the cheaper off peak times. This is because these tariffs charge the day usage at a higher rate and then night usage at cheaper prices. The actual amount depends on the region and tariff. With 80-90% electricity being used at night, though, you're definitely on the right track.

Sacsquacco gives excellent advice about some of the pitfalls we come across with these types of meter. You seem to be on top of these with the checks you've done. You're also doing the right thing in using as much during the off peak times as possible. It's the best way to keep costs down. When you've a minute, check out the 'Saving Energy' pages on our website too. Lots more tips to help you save money by saving energy.

Hope this is useful newfoundglory. Let me know if you need any more details as happy to help.
