Plusnet will allow you to drop the landline on an FTTP connection.

Zen do FTTP without line rental

You can either have FTTP at £16.25 with line rental at £17 OR FTTP without line rental at £30.00

Other suppliers appear to take the same stance.

You either pay an all-in-one charge for fibre and line rental where you get a phone number or slightly less if you don't want the line rental and phone number

Whichever way you go you pay the line rental

Every telecom provider does not bundle the line rental charge in with the broadband charge. They are always separated. That is why you have the two numbers. It is probably just legacy convention as to why the line rental fee is listed below your telephone number but it does not imply anything. You need to pay for both as without a landline you have no access to broadband as you don't pay for the line to your house.

Again, the line rental covers the charge for the upkeep of the telecom cables to your house. It does not matter what you use the line for - voice/data/both/nothing.

FTTP is a separate cable, the copper pair for the voice line is not required to provide the service as a fibre line is installed (hence "Fibre To The Premises". BTs billing system may not be able to cope without a phone number though (I have no experience, FTTP is not available where I live).

The council has just totally re-paved the road AND pavement, for the whole street. Missed a great opportunity to put in FTTP there.

Probably still too much to put in FTTP, but how much was it?
One off costs, as well as ongoing?

All depends on whether BT had any plans to FTTP that area. If you already have FTTC then it is doubtful that BT would even consider FTTP.
