Upgrade PC - SDD and 3.5 HDD

Hi

Was after some help.....

I bought a Dell Vostro (Hotukdeals / Ballicom offer) and thought I'd go the whole hog with the SSD upgrade etc twining it with a spare 2TB HDD I've got.

Got round to doing it today and slight problemo.... The length of power cables between the two connectors (P3 and P5) for the drives is insufficient. It looks to be dead :footie: accurate for two standard 3.5" HDD but with the caddy I have the SSD sits plumb square in the middle of the caddy both front to back and side to side.

I really need the SSD to be as close to the front as possible and further to the right.

Any ideas / options or do I need to get my tape measure out and start drilling holes to re-align the SSD in my caddy and holes to re-align the caddy in the HDD space?

    Hi

It was a cheap caddy from ebay.

I've tried moving / rotating / switching positions / routing the power cable from bottom up (top down is default) but no joy.

The SSD sits near the front of the caddy (as in the picture but the HDD enclosure fittings screw holes ensure the caddy sits squarely in the middle of the enclosure.

This may be a silly question but...this is a SSD it doesn't have any moving parts; do I really need to physically fit it in place?

We are talking about a desktop that will sit, stationary under my desk.

I use this caddy which puts the SSD connectors in exactly the same position as a 3.5in drive:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Icybox-IB-2535StS-2-5-inch-3-5-inch-Converter/dp/B003952FFQ?ie=UTF8&keywords=2.5%20to%203.5%20caddy&qid=1461007342&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1

However that was only because the desktop case I use has spring loaded rails that wouldn't accept anything else, for my previous case I just screwed the drive into a couple of the drive bay holes without a caddy as it has no moving parts and stayed in place fine.

    Hi

This caddy appears to place the 2.5" drive directly in the middle of the caddy (equidistant on all 4 sides) but there appears to be a PCB at the front.

Can you confirm if the 2.5" drive slots in to the PCB (internally) and then the PCs power / SATA cable connect to the PCB externally?

Yes, the SSD connectors are abutted to the cut out end of the caddy; centered side to side.

The caddy has 3 screw holes down each side, with the spacing marrying up with standard HDD enclosure spacing, i.e. not equidistant.

Depending on Johnmcl7's answer I may buy that caddy or 'bodge it', so to speak.

So... the problem is that your PSU and SATA cables are too short? Why not extend them with something like this:

The SSD with my OS is hanging loose inside the case, dangling by its power and signal cables, at somewhere around 45 degrees to the vertical. I'm writing this post using that drive right now

You're right, it does not need to be held securely in a drive bay as a physical drive would. Neater if it's in a drive bay, but for that all you need are extension cables, which are easily found on eBay and Amazon
