BT infinity

Options
Hi all, I have not long had BT infinity installed in my home & to be fair (also given I live in West Wales where 5mb is considered fast) it is very good.

I do have an issue & thought it easier to check & ask here, basically the hub is located at the bottom of the stairs yet when I am upstairs in my bedroom or say bathroom, my wifi signal drops from my iPhone. I've used my daughters iPod as well just to see if it is a fault with my phone but the same happens.

The walls aren't particularly thick so can't see it being that... anyone have any suggestions?

Initially, I would try small shifts in the router's position or orientation (I don't know the BT Home Hub specifically, but some routers with internal antennas are slightly directional).

A more geeky thing you could do (requires an Android device) is to use the WiFi Analyzer app to see if there are other wireless networks (neighbours' for example) interfering with your upstairs reception, and then change the transmission channels on your router to avoid congested channels.

Change the router around and change the channels it broadcasts on .Those are the standard do firsts .
The HH5 has a very good WiFi signal .

Oh and turn off Smart Settings in the wireless section of the router .

a free program called inssider can also analyse your neighbours wifi signals to see of there is a conflict. I have the home hub 5 and find the wifi signal good compared to the router Plusnet originally gave me

Make sure you're connecting at 5ghz, rather than 2.4ghz

Today I replaced my laptop's wifi card with one that also supports 5ghz and the difference is amazing. I now get a very strong signal, whereas the old one, connecting at 2.4, was patchy.

I've checked with inssider and none of my neighbours are using 5ghz, but there are over a dozen 2.4ghz signals. One in particular is a strong TalkTalk one that is hogging 7 of the 11 available bands.

According to inssider, my 'link score' is 100 (perfect) when I connect at 5ghz, but it wavers constantly between 40-60 when at 2.4ghz.

Note: I don't own a HH5, as I'm on Plusnet and use my own cheapo dual-band router, but the principle is the same - always connect at 5ghz if you can. (I've set my router up with 2 different network names for the 2 bands, so that I can choose which to connect to)

You could look into a range extender or a set of home plugs that have a wireless access point on one end.
