How do you lodge an appeal, this is very unfair to do to a child, sending to a school that was never considered but sending to a school that is in special measrures and has a very poor ofstead report.

Op, to have a successful appeal you usually have to show how the school has not applied the admissions criteria correctly for e.g. in our area, a well know cut through was not included in home to school distance, so appeals were won on that ground. If the child has an exceptional develomental needs that can only be met by this particular school, then appeals have been sometimes been successful on those grounds.

A school in special measures will usually have lots of spotlight on it and support from the LEA to improve. This will mean extra funding, specialist support, probably new leadership team etc. It will be inspected again in the near future, so there will be a big drive to raise standards.

I would just like to address some of the comments here.
My school has a high proportion of EAL (English as an additional language) children. Firstly, this mix makes children accepting of other cultures and beliefs. Secondly, a high proportion of EAL children does not stop the progress of the other children. in my own class the EAL are my more able, it is the white British I have issues with.
Also, parents should take into account when the Ofsted report was published. If it was 3 years ago a lot could have changed for the better since then. As the OP said the school in question as in special measures it will be receive extra hep from the LA, another school and possibly the academy chain( if it is in one).
Also, look at the results for the last couple of years. If one cohort is very high on the SEN front, the results will be lower for that year. You might find the previous 2 years were ok.

Thanks for the replies. The ofstead report is very poor, way under national average in every catagory. Only 43% speak English, itchas a rating of 2. 54% acieve the maths score where average is 80% only 10% reach the maths level the average point score is 25.5 and 42% on free school meals, thats ofstead talking not me. As for the comment regarding racism, thats very unfair as its an ofstead comment. So are ofstead racists? Very unfair.
This school has a very unhealthy ofstead report, they speak 15 languages so thats telling us how many different kind of children go thrre. Its very worrying that there is a very high percentage of these children are not the same nationality of my grandson

no You said this not ofsted, what's wrong with 15 different languages, I do find racism is bred in the home you just proved it

People are trying to turn this into a racist thread, so saying different kind of children is racist? If i had said children from many races or children from all around the world would still be a rasist comment? Im far from rasist people are packing like wolves picking out words to make this a rasist thread. Ive seen this many times in topics you get 1 person who begins the pebble on tbe pool and soon others jump on the bandwagon. I have many friends from other cuttures. And not one of my friends have ever called me a racist. I wont be looking at this thread again, infact i wont be here again. Disgusting behaviour from people here.

It is because you asserted that the fact that there were children from many races, speaking many languages were the reason you didn't want to accept the place.

Rather ironic that I the foreigner can produce a higher level of English than OP!! If their family speak as OP writes their grandchild will struggle with reading and writing due to poor vocab and structure.

But oh well, I'm just a foreigner with foreign kids who simply shouldn't be able to mix with OPs children.

To answer MSE Towers - my older son is disabled and went to a mainstream primary school, where a good care package was funded by the LEA. I was told a year later that my younger son was unlikely to be accepted, as the school was over subscribed. I pointed out that as I could not be at two different schools to drop off and collect, I would have to remove my older son so that they could go to the same school. Funnily enough, my younger son got a place at the same school as his brother. Now, you could accuse me of being cynical, but could the fact that my older son's care package (which included a full time, Level 3 TA) would go with him, be a factor in my younger son being accepted after I was told it was unlikely? Surely not.....

To the OP, your posts do come across as prejudiced. Is your grandson so precious that he cannot mix with children from other cultures? Don't you want him to embrace tolerance? Or would you prefer to push your own rigid views onto him, instead of allowing him to grow and develop into a decent human being, with his own opinions?

I am not sure how long ago this was, but rule changes mean that schools have absolutely no discretion now. They have to follow to the letter the published criteria, they have to use a computer program to work out catchment areas. They have to be completely transparent, if they are not, any appeal will succeed and it would mean that a class of 30 becomes a class of 31 or more and the school would have to personally fund a second teacher.

I think it did go on years ago, but it wouldn't happen now, parents are much more appeal savvy and schools could not take the risk.

It is Ofsted - not Ofstead

I am sure that all the children speak English, however some may have English as an Additional Language, often speaking 2 or 3 languages.

Your comments about the educational attainment make no sense. Are you talking about L4+ and L5+ attainment?

42% FSM is slightly higher than the national of 26% but not excessively so.

Did Ofsted put the % at each level in the report? That is very unusual. The figures are available on the primary performance tables.

    What was the Ofsted judgement?

there are 40 children in the reception class at our primary with 6 members of staff.. 3 teachers and 3 assistants .. other children who have additional needs may also have their own assistant (a young man in my daughters class has his own).. one of the reasons we chose it! Other reasons being the high staff:child ratio, the individuality shown in displayed work, excellent facilities, scenic surroundings and it was all so welcoming and homely when we went to visit.. and the dinners are all cooked on site and lovely! I don't care if people are from other planets never mind other countries.. just that they are nice!

they then split the year groups for year 1, year 1/2 and year 2 to keep classes to the 30.. based on age rather than ability.

This year 18 of the 40 got in with siblings in the school. there were 37 first choice places allocated and 3 second choice. I guess with the teacher ratios they can have more children on appeal. Do they still take floor area into account for allowed numbers??

Yes, it is one teacher to 30 and then anything over that needs a second teacher. That is a good ratio.

The floor plan is taken account of on the asset plan and is factored into the allowable numbers throughout the school.
