An alternative to a hotel could also be 'serviced apartments'.
These are generally designed for short term stays as they're what people working away on business stay in so a one month lease wouldn't be as problematic as a normal rental.
You can clobber the builder for pretty much every expense you incur, even things like extra fuel costs for commuting to work, so keep receipts for EVERYTHING you spend during that time
They may say they're reluctant to pay it but that's irrelevant... The law says they are responsible for all costs if you take them to court and both their solicitor and your solicitor know this.0 -

exactly this.
If they wont play nice, you should play by the rules, and hit them for everything.
The rules are not up for interpretation, they know it, their solicitor knows it, your solicitor knows it.
FYI, its in their best interest to pay for everything upfront.
if you book a hotel and get it reimbursed, they cant reclaim the VAT, if they book it for you, they can, if they DONT sort it out, they'll pay 20% more than tey need to.0 -

Obviously we have not accepted this and our solicitor has asked them to cover hotel, food, laundry, storage and removal costs. They are very reluctant despite this all being their build directors' fault for giving out the first ever fixed completion date before a roof has been finished! They have messed up but aren't too happy to put it right. Our solicitor has advised that we should issue a "notice to withdraw" from the sale to force them to play ball... but at the end of the day it's our dream house and we don't want to jeopardise the purchase.. not sure how far to push it at the minute!

Update no.3
To date (almost 4 weeks down the line), Bellway have only last week asked "without prejudice" for our costs. We passed them yesterday and they include hotel accommodation, food, removals and storage (we had the use of a van and 5 days to move originally but they were wiped out with this joke of a situation), travel from hotel to daughters school (34 miles a day!), laundry, lost holidays from work and loss of foodstuff that we will have to bin (give away) next week.
Bellway are dealing with this situation very poorly and still have not agreed to any of our costs. They say they have not been in this situation ever and don't know how to deal with it, yep I'll second that!!
Anyway, with mere days to go now until we hand over our rented house .. the ball is in their court0 -
Tell them they can either
(a) pay in full, or
(b) go to court, lose, then pay in full plus two sets of legal fees."Real knowledge is to know the extent of one's ignorance" - Confucius0 -

Don't see how you can claim food, as you would have to buy that anywayDon't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0 -

If they don't have cooking facilities, then it's perfectly reasonable. No different to me claiming a meal on expenses when staying away on business rather than the company insisting I should cook it myself using the trouser press as a heat source.0 -
I would have to buy food yes, which I would then store in my fridge freezer, then use my cooker and my plates and cutlery to make meals for my family, then I would use my sink to wash up and put things away in my kitchen cupboard. The cost of my weekly online shop averages at £50, the cost of 1 evening meal with drinks for 3 of us in the hotel is £40+.. times that by 14+ days then add lunch on too, leaves me slightly out of pocket??0
