Renting with a low credit score

My partner and myself are looking at moving in with each other after our son is born. We have looked at estate agents and have seen some beautiful places. However, I have no credit score as I'm only just 20 and never felt the need to get a credit card ect. My partner has a very low credit score after he had a credit card at 18 which went to default after, he didn't make payments.
How will this affect us? We could possibly have a guarantor providing they fit the criteria.
Is there an easy way to find a private landlord in our area that won't necessarily do a credit check?

The credit score you have does not matter at all.

You need income to afford the rent payments and that income should be expected to last as long as the tenancy lasts...i.e 6 months.

If you earn enough you won't need a guarantor.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

Any CCJs will show up on financial checks. Landlords who know what they are doing in terms of looking after their rental properties will tend to do all the checks.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, I don't think the credit checks they do are very comprehensive. I have a bad credit rating after defaults. I asked my mum to be my guarantor on a previous property. When they ran the checks they told me it was not required.
And with my last house, I had no problems. I just told them about my DMP. I think references are more important from previous landlords. I've only been late with my rent (by a few days) once in five years.

We have been renting and all we had to do was provide a employer reference confirming our income, they didn't do any actual credit checks as far as I'm aware!

Have you the income to cover the rent?
If you've got a bad credit history you can explain it to the agents/landlord. Have you checked it yourself (there are free ways such as clearscore/noddle) to give you an idea?
Most houses we've rented have credit checked. Only one didn't as we knew we'd fail it so we paid extra deposit.
Some have a minimum income they expect so you could then get a guarantor.
