Car Tax Renewal: Credit Card Surcharge
I've just renewed my car tax and was surprised that the DVLA still charges a £2.50 credit card surcharge. Their reasoning is explained in this FOI request from 2012:
(Sorry, I'm a newbie and unable to post proper URLs so you'll have to replace the [dot]s)

However, last year the government was boasting that it had successfully negotiated a Europe-wide 0.30% cap on bank surcharges which would therefore save customers money:

A tad hypocritical?

If you think it unwarranted, then there's a simple solution. Don't use a credit card. Job jobbed.0

That link you gave relates to the amount that banks are allowed to charge businesses and not the amount that businesses can charge consumers.
There is already legislation in place -The Consumer Rights (Payment Surcharges) Regulations 2012, that covers this subject and this legislation states that consumers can be charged an amount up to the full cost incurred by the business in accepting card payments.0 -

When I taxed my car 2 months ago online, it clearly told/warned me that using a credit charge would occur a £2.50 charge but using a debit card is free, so I used the debit card.paddedjohn wrote: »Cheaper to pay by direct debit
But only paying every 12 months and not every 6 months or every month

oh
i thought car tax had been abandoned seeing as every car in my village has tax discs all showing at least a year out of date:eek:0 -
First thing i ask when paying for something, if there a fee for paying by CC, if yes then i use the debit card instead.
My car insurance paperwork shows a CC fee, but when i phone to haggle or renew than i ask and so far they have waived the fee.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
