Easyjet - can I claim additional expenses?

I'm after some advice / your thoughts on my situation.
I was due to fly from Gatwick to Nantes with easyjet on 27th March, returning 29th March. I was literally within 10 feet of the plane door only to then be advised at that point that the flight was cancelled due to "no crew".
I have successfully claimed €250 compensation due to the delay (although I haven't received the cheque yet) and easyjet have refunded the costs of my flights, however my question is around some other expenses that I incurred.....
1. Return train tickets from home to Gatwick - can I claim for these? Easyjet are currently saying no as this is considered a "private arrangement".
2. Car Hire in France - I'm not clear if easyjet are rejecting this claim or not but I'd expect at the very least for this cost to be refunded.
The exact response I received was:
So far I've responded saying that I don't agree - they've already agreed compensation under 261/2004 therefore surely they can't now say that this doesn't apply?
They are yet to respond to my challenge but I would welcome your thoughts as to whether I should be able to claim for these expenses or not.
Many Thanks

I regret to inform you that we will not be able to refund the receipts as the journey to and from the airport in this case will be considered your private arrangement, not compliant with the European regulation (EC) No.261/2004: http://www.easyjet.com/en/help/at-the-airport/delay-and-cancellations

refundable additional expenses relate to those incurred whilst you are delayed
airlines are not liable for consequential losses and these should be claimed from your travel insurance0
