Coventry - Areas to buy

I was wondering if anyone could help. I am looking to buy with my husband and we are unsure of the areas in coventry. Is there anyone that can help with areas within Coventry that are nice places to live?

I heard Wyken is nice but only parts of it, would anyone be able to suggest which parts are nice as we have viewings this week.

Stivichall - very nice but VERY pricey!

Coundon? I have been told is a nice area but some say it is not.

Hawkesbury Village (longford) - not sure about this, can anyone help?

Coventry does not have many nice areas and with a budget of 210 we are struggling to find decent properties. Can anyone help, it has been 9 months and I am going out of mind :(

Any help is much appreciated!!

Avoid Hillfields, Look at Earlsdon going out to Warwick way. Lived in Earlsdon 4 years during uni and use to go running towards Warick and saw nice areas.

As above, might help if we know what type of property you are looking for too
  • Finham, Stivichall and Allesley Village are by far the best areas in Coventry. If you can stretch your money to buy in these areas I would recommend it.

Cheylesmore, Earlsdon, parts of Walsgrave and Coundon are cheaper and worth looking into.

I would avoid Willenall, Stoke and Aldermoor like the plague.

If you take a drive round you can see clearly which areas are generally run down.
  • Why Coventry? if for work can you commute in as 210 could get you a decent house in surrounding areas.
  • I grew up in Coventry and have many family members still living there. Someone else has already asked what kind of property you are looking for, eg. a family house, a flat, bungalow, terraced, semi, detached etc? An older house or a new house? Housing estate or not? Where will you or your partner need to commute to go to work? Are schools a consideration?

Coventry was very badly damaged in the Blitz and most homes in the city are terraced housing, built for the thousands of workers in the (now mostly defunct) factories in districts such as Stoke, Canley, Tile Hill, Foleshill, Holbrooks, Brownshill Green (former Jaguar Cars factory site) and the old Peugeot car factory in Ryton, (which is now a parcel distribution centre).

Most of the heavy industry has now gone and service industries have taken their place, with many old factory sites now retail parks, housing or light industry.

Most of my immediate family members live in the North West of the city in nice residential areas but only a short drive to the ring road and city centre....do take a look at Keresley and Coundon (ie. Brownshill Green Road, Scots Lane, Holloway Fields district of Coundon eg. to get your bearings take a drives near the "Wallace" pub and the "Nugget" pubs and down to the "Brooklands" pub where it is adjacent to the Allesley area. They are mostly older residential houses built just after the war but generally well kept and modernised. It is a catchment area for the sought after Coundon Court, Hollyfast and Christ the King RC schools.

The part of Coundon to avoid is the much older housing near the Ring Road and Holyhead Road.

Other nice areas are Whitmore Park, Allesley, Stoke Park Estate, Binley Woods....and the most expensive areas are Styvechale and Finham. I have an aunt in Wyken and she's happy there but is off a major road....be careful though as there is a lot of congestion with traffic going to the major University Hospital in nearby Walsgrave and heading for the M6 and M69 motorways.

Some parts of Earlsdon are nice....but it is full of students renting houses.....there are some very nice larger houses, especially going out towards the Memorial Park but you need a large budget for those! Parking is a major problem, some roads are now designated for residents only for street parking.

Going to the outskirts of the city you could take a look at Mount Nod and Eastern Green, some housing is on (non council) estates.

Personally I would not choose to live in the Longford area, there are some newer (shoebox) homes there generally would be considered a less prosperous area.
  • Also avoid Henley Green and Bell Green.

Have you thought about the small town of Bedworth which is only a short drive away (other side of the M6 motorway)? House prices have always been cheaper than Coventry and there are some very nice houses there which may be more attractive for your budget.

Not the way to encourage those of us in Coventry to suggest places, really ;)

Depends what you define as 'nice'. Earlsdon, Allesley, Chapelfields, Binley, Finham, bits of Coundon, bits of Cheylesmore, bits of Wyken all fine. Baginton, Binley Woods fine and are all-but Coventry.

To my mind, £210k is a massive budget unless you're after a ve-ry large house! Head out to Wolston, Ryton, Stretton, Brinklow too.

If they're sniffy about Coventry, they certainly will be for Bedduth.

You will find that Stivichall and Finham are very expensive, this is partly due to the catchment of Finham Park School. They are also very nice areas too, big houses and it's on the edge of the city so quite green, esp Finham.
Earlsdon is nice, I like the high street. Alot of Earlsdon is terraced with poor parking but the other parts of Earlsdon are very large detached houses.

You should be able to get a pretty nice house for £210,000. I bought a three bed detached in Wyken which is a corner plot with space for three cars, front and rear gardens and a garage for £148,000 but this was five years ago.
I grew up in one of the above mentioned villages and my house there would be £250,000-£280,000+. Binley Woods is nice but I don't think £210,000 will cut it there. Wolston isn't bad, next village out from Binley Woods. You could also look at Brinklow.

I'm not going to list areas to avoid as I think that's a bit harsh on the people on here that live in them. Not everybody has a big budget, feel free to PM me and I'll give you more info on the different areas of the city.

Also, are you looking to put your children in school here? If you have any that is. The better the school, the more pricey the area

Why have you decided on Coventry and where are you moving from? What is on your wishlist in terms of house style, size etc.? Others have suggested surrounding area - have you already considered these?

You say you have viewings booked - how did you choose these?

Have you considered renting in one of your chosen areas to get a better feel for the place and where exactly you would like to buy?

Sorry that's ended up a list of questions but you haven't really given much info for me to be able to offer suggestions.
