  • Yes, they can, but they've got to be available. I've always booked standard tickets and never got one yet :( . That's when booking umpteen months in advance.

Fair enough. Seven months in advance for me, no problem.
  • Most new BA bookings also have similar flexibility on the day of travel.

Ryanair's missed flight by upto an hour makes it better though.
  • For teh first time, I've had a look at Ryanair Business Plus for a positioning flight FROM Dublin.

It looks to good to be true - am I reading this right ?

Or am I missing something ?

p.s on some flights its substantially CHEAPER to book Business Plus as your luggage is included, rather than an extra.

You aren't missing anything - flight changes on the day are 'free' (I put that in quotation marks as you're paying a premium fare for this facility, amongst other things).

On the date(s) I was looking at, the premium on the fare was negated by the addition of 'free' luggage and in some cases, the premium fare was substantially cheaper than the standard fare plus luggage. :j

In my case flying USA-LHR-DUB, then Ryanair to MAN, would be £1000 cheaper than flying USA-LHR-MAN.
Blimey! As a matter of interest, is USA-LHR-DUB cheaper than just USA-LHR? Is it all to do with taxes?

    Currently :-
DUB - CAN -USA USA - LHR - DUB is £800 cheaper than
DUB- CAN -USA USA - LHR for my 2016 holidays

If I start in LHR, its £800 dearer again - £1600 dearer overall (for our family group, 2 adults, 1 bigger sprog, 1 smaller sprog).

The difference in price from when I booked my flights last September via Dublin and today if I started/finished in LHR is £2600.

The Ryanair flights (incl luggage ) and nights B&B at Dublin airport before we fly across the Atlantic is costing me less than £200.

The flights to/from the USA both go via LHR

Same can apply to flybe. Booked last week a "get more" fare for only €7 more per passenger than a "just fly" fare + bag.

As with Ryanair, includes on the day flexibility and seat selection. A no brainer for €7 especially considering I'll also be connecting from a long haul flight.

Its a pity you couldn't book
DUB - CAN -USA USA - LHR - LGW - DUB
and just got held up between LHR and LGW , thus (accidently) missing Dublin flight

I have just booked Flybe "get more fare" to Italy for July and it was actually cheaper than the basic fare once you accounted for bags and seat charges.

Only partly taxes, more significant (especially in premium cabins) is how airlines price differently in home (or very lucrative) markets compared to flights that start/end in other markets with different competition.

And yes, DUB-LHR-USA-LHR-DUB (on BA/AA) would in most cases be cheaper than LHR-USA-LHR. DUB-LHR-USA-LHR would usually be priced somewhere in between, the one it is closer to being quite variable.

Also applies to several other European origin cities in addition to DUB (thigh of course DUB also offers the chance to fly to/from the USA without coming through LHR, and with the benefit of immigration pre-clearance at DUB.
