Happy Thursday Frugal pals :hello: thanks for starting us Ally hope your walk is fun.

    My Thursday will look like:

*check banking, update spreadsheet, check surveys and FPL. No PAD until tomorrow when DH payday.
    *meals from stores
*one thing of annoying thing/April list
*take door off in lounge and take to tip
*contact someone about fitting new door
*quick flylady of kitchen and bathroom

Help please :D Q1 Any of you colour your own hair? I [STRIKE]would like [/STRIKE] maybe need to, but have never done it and certainly don't want to pay salon prices - any advice?

Q2 - we appear to have a family of Great Tits (I think) nesting in our wall above our overflow pipe from the bathroom. They are pulling insulation out of the house and discarding it. I'm quite happy for them to have a warm home and assume I can't move them anyway. Anyone had any similar experience? They'll have to go at some point as that is where we are building our extension so will no longer be an external wall. I assume they are nesting with young given the time of year.

    TIA

    PF

Hi PF, I used to colour my hair all the time and had no problems with the semi permanent stuff you shampoo in. When it started to get more grey, it needed the permanent colouring that needed applying more specifically, and the roots retouching, which is when I resorted to a salon. I don't bother at all now, it is more or less grey all over :)

On the great tits, if that is what they are, they only take a few weeks to hatch and rear their babies, so keep an eye open for when the little ones fly. Once they have gone, you might want to block up the hole in case the parents decide to produce another clutch of eggs. Obviously you would need to check before you blocked it up that the nest is empty :) My DD has an arrangement whereby a nestbox on the side of her house has a camera in it whose pictures can be displayed on their TV (her DH is into rigging up electronic stuff like that), and it is so interesting to watch all the various stages. They have great tits nesting this year, last year it was blue tits but they must have been beaten to it this year :rotfl:
  • Good Morning,

So I got an email this morning to say the property had been let. Is it really that difficult to send a polite text explaining this? What is wrong with people nowadays!? :(

Anyway, felt bright and fresh this morning, a happy walk to school with the children, trying to supress my anxieties and focus my attention on them and smiling. Still hiding out during the day at my mums though to avoid bumping into them.

Checked budget for this month, looking OK although not managed to get any savings aside as I had a bad month last month. Need to be good this month as its my 30th next month so would like to treat myself to a small celebration. Still waiting on my Mastercard from BT for switching, getting annoyed with them now. Check for houses and job hunt too.

Also, want to open savings account for my kiddies, so hunting around for the best ones.

    Think thats it x

  • Oh, I happened to weigh myself the other day as people keep commenting on how much weight I have lost since having DS2 and its seems within the last 5-6 weeks, with all my panic and feeling down, not eating etc... I have lost 1/2 stone. Made me really worry about myself as although I would like to have lost some weight, that wasnt how I wanted to achieve it. Most of my clothes are hanging off of me as it is and cant afford new jeans for now.... charity shop hunt at the weekend me thinks!

    Hi Guys,

I have a bit of a confession to make. I feel really guilty about it as well.

Yesterday, I just couldn't be bothered to make sandwiches for lunch to take into work. So, instead, I did an evil thing, I went to Pret! Argh! £5.65 for a sandwich and orange juice. It's a one off, and something I rarely do, but I felt so bad about it all of yesterday evening mulling over this £5.65 I spent on lunch.

Apart from that, 2 weeks today until pay day again. Can't wait. :)

    Hello Thursday Frugalistas,
Where has this week gone? Well, I know where, I suppose. It's disappeared in a week of fretting about the car. Still got the courtesy car. Hope we may get ours back tomorrow, but garage said it could be the beginning of next week.
Not an exciting day here. Too wet for gardening. It's brightened up a bit now, but I'm achey from all the digging, & shifting about of containers, etc, out there yesterday, so am having a sedate day indoors. The money-saving bits are:
*Washed hair & let it dry naturally. Will have to have a little go with the straighteners later though, as I look like the wild woman of the East Midlands!!
*Took soup out of freezer for tomorrow's packed lunch.
*Created Facebook album of my recent knitted gifts & shared among my friends/family with details/prices.
*Checked that the baby pepper & cucumber plants survived their first night out in the chilly greenhouse. All fine.
*Have done next week's meal plans, which make good use of stuff already in the freezer.
    *Write shopping list.
*mr f has asked me for about the 8,000,000th time what I'd like for my birthday. Apart from a few little bits & pieces, I can't really think of anything. City centre trip on Sunday, so I shall see if anything catches my eye.
*Cheque for £150 arrived in the post from my parents with a little note saying 'Hope this helps a little bit towards the car bill'. What a very kind thought. I contacted them to say we do have the money to pay this horrible bill in full without having to borrow, so we can manage, & they are not to leave themselves short, but they were both insistent.
Well, today's jobs are done, dinner is red bean curry from the freezer, which just needs heating up, so I am aiming to have some leisure time this afternoon.......will watch recorded TV prog, knit & progress my current genealogy project.
Wishing everyone a calm, productive Thursday,

    Purple Fairy,
Yes, I've been colouring my own hair at home for ages. It's not difficult to do. In my 20s & 30s, I had it professionally coloured at a salon & it was more expensive than I could afford (still went every 6 weeks though, as used to be naughty spender).
I've used various brands, but settled on 'Nice & Easy' as it really is easy & they had some good strong red colours. Last year, I swapped to 'Nice & Easy Age Defy' which I think is aimed at 'women of a certain age' who need a more gentle product & I've found it to be really good. Unlike most kits, it has a pre-treatment sachet of 'smoother' which helps the colour 'take' better on drier ends of hair. My hair is pretty much grey underneath these days, & both these kits cover grey hair completely. I use a more natural colour now, as I find that my root re-growth isn't as noticeable.
I would advise you always to do the skin test. I did once have a very bad allergic reaction to a home hair colour kit (though have also reacted to expensive salon dye, so I think that's just how I am). Also, if you have long hair, you are likely to need 2 packs, depending on your colour choice. Lastly, always shop around. The price of these kits is around £5-99 to £6-99 each.....substantially more for those branded under the name of a 'celebrity' hairdresser or salon. You can often find 2 for £10s or 2 for £12s. Consistently lowest price used to be our Wilko's, but it varies.
Oh......& I save a little bit of money by colouring my whole head, then saving the mixer-bottle, which I wash out. Next time my roots need doing, I buy the kit, but mix up just half of it in the saved bottle & just do my roots. I make up the rest of it to do a root application the next time, then it's back to using a full pack/whole head. I know plenty of people would think that's too much faffing around, but it works for me, & it works even better now that I am using a more natural shade as it's easier to blend roots & lengths.
Hope this is a bit helpful, anyway.

    Hi guys

I've been invigilating an exam today - they never got round to telling me how much the fee for it is but I can remember I thought it was quite good when my pal told me last year.. Oh well, will be a nice surprise when it comes through + expenses.

Apart from that I'm at home today. I've hit a bit of a funk though so trying not to dwell on stuff and just get on with it...

Going to take the dog out now and then tidy round, put the washing on, empty the dishwasher...

Also need to sort stuff for tonight's class :)

Will drop off OH later as he's working so happy about that. :)

I've done mine myself a few times now. Definitely don't want to start keeping up a salon routine... I'm going to try this product though... my sis swears by it between her monthly salon visit so I think it would hopefully work for me with just a few greys :D

Thanks to Dawn, La E and Foxgloves for taking the time to reply to my questions, I knew you lovely lot would know (and I also knew you wouldn't be going to a salon ;))

I'm going to try some of the products recommended and let you know how I get on. I don;t want to dye my hair a different color per se, just enough to shade out some grey bits so hopefully it won;t look too awful. I keep you posted.

DH loves photography and has managed to get some lovely pictures of our new 'neighbours' You can also hear the rustling when in the bathroom, lets hope they don't burrow too far. Will definitely fill hole in, in the short term once everyone has flown.

been a good day on the MS front on the whole, went to check out a pair of trainers for DH, although they were good value, he decided they weren't worth the money so we left it :T We did share a cake though as a treat :o after buying barginous fruit off market (got there just as they were packing up so got loads - including a massive bowl of plums, 3 punnets of raspberries, 4 punnet strawberries, 1 blueberries, 4 giant jackets and 5 grapefuit for £7 :T That should keep us going for a bit.

Off to do a couple more things on my list, before I put the smalls to bed and settle down for the evening. Had an unusual pain in one side of my stomach all day, hopefully another good nights sleep will shake it off.
