My neighbour just had the internal ones put in.
They look smart but they seem impractical.
I would not take them into consideration when offering, other than thinking about how to remove them.

Surely compared to blinds or curtains they are highly impractical?

They're either covering the window or sticking out in the front room?

    I'm happy to be educated!

They can be folded flat to the wall when completely opened.

I personally like the plantation shutters but I can't seem them adding value. My friend paid around 2k to have them on three or four windows (nearly have the cost was the installation).
I can't see them adding that value to your house.
Also for every person that likes them there will be another person who detests them (or the thought of cleaning them)
Are you over looked? Is that why hubby wants them?

I assume you mean shutters like this:

They are very nice, but do block out quite a bit of light even when they're 'open'. Given new build windows are often pretty small, and if you had (say) a north facing window, it could make the room pretty gloomy - suggest you wait until you're in and make a decision them.

If you want to do a trial run, get yourself a cheap Venetian blind from Homebase or B&Q and see if you like the effect.

I'd say they will add about zero per window, so if you have a lot of windows, they will add "a lot" multiplied by zero. Why on earth would they "add value"? Even a kitchen or bathroom wont add value beyond their cost. An extension, maybe.

If you are selling, some buyers will say "hmm nice but I'm not paying extra for them" and others will say "hideous I'm knocking £2,000 off to remove and make good"

I'd be in the latter camp.

I agree with everyone saying that these won't add any value.

I think the issue is whether you and your husband like the look of them, and whether you prefer them to curtains, net curtains or blinds.

I personally prefer 'proper' curtains, but I'd prefer plantation shutters for privacy, over a wooden blind or net curtains. I wouldn't pay any extra for a house which had them, but I might be slightly more inclined to buy it than an otherwise identical house which didn't, if the design of the house was such that something was needed for privacy during the day.

However, you are going to be living in the house. If you like them, have them. It's your home

Any bets that the husband's fallen for an ad or salesman's claims?

I think they make a feature of a bay window but not so much on a standard size one.

I agree with everyone else that it will not add value.

Who's husband ? My OH is not my husband, but yes both like them. I think better for privacy, so hall & bedroom etc. My preference is not to have them in the lounge as I like to look out from my sofa and nose on other peoples husbands :D

I think the OH was trying to convince me on the they will add value thing.
