White shutters do they add value?

Options
My OH wants to get those white shutters for most of the windows in our new build once we get in.

I do like them and haven't shopped around yet but they seem expensive. He says it will add value as will be sold on with the house.

I can't see us moving in the next 5 years and also worried these will date?

I'm guessing exterior shutters? They may add "curb appeal" to some buyers, but not to others (some may regard it as extra maintenance)

Can't see how they'd add much value.

Have you checked your covenent's even allow it?

Wouldn't be for me. Much better ways of blocking people looking in without restricting natural light coming in. And without the cleaning hassle...

Would these go on the inside of the windows, or the outside? Are they for practical purposes or merely decorative?
I can't see how they could add value to be honest.

In the right property internal shutters can look very nice, personally I think the faux outdoor shutters are rather trailer park fashion.

I'd not fancy them. If not originals then I'd probably disagree with your taste - and then they might become a maintenance nuisance.

If they're not there for a good/proper reason, then leave it.

They won't add value, they'll just make it so your OH is happier with the way his house looks.

I assume that they would be inside the house? The problem with putting shutters on the outside in the UK is that the windows open the wrong way. For shutters on the outside you would have to keep the windows closed when the shutters were closed so you couldn't do what they do in France in the summer which is to close the shutters and leave the windows open inside. For shutters on the outside you need windows that open inwards.

^^^This, they usually have very strict rules on the outside of the house, I know on ours we cannot change it other than lights etc, door must stay black, no decorative fencing

I'm getting them (indoor ones, presumably) for the bottom half of my lounge bay window. No, I doubt they add value, but they may be a big plus for anyone who buys my house who also happens to like them and maybe make the house more saleable. For someone preferring curtains, they'll probably work against me.

  • Just to clarify -Inside ones :rotfl:the white plantation style, quite popular around here, maybe this is a regional trend?

Presume you are talking about plantation shutters. If you prefer them to curtains or blinds then get them. But they won't add value any more than made to measure curtains add value. Wooden blinds can give a similar look at a cheaper price.
