Giving card details to budget foreign hotel

I am trying to book a hotel abroad and the cheap hotel say they want my card details to reserve the rooms. I am reluctant to do this for obvious reasons but appreciate your comments and tips please.

It's normal practice, the fact that it's foreign and cheap shouldn't make any difference.

For this particular purpose debit and credit cards are equally protected.

No different from booking an expensive UK hotel using credit card.

  • If you don't turn up for the booking the hotel has the right to still charge you in full for lost revenue (called a 'no-show' fee or something similar, same as the UK), they can only do this if they have your card details.

Nothing, any hotel or travel agent could fraudulently use your card details if they wish. However giving your details give permission for the hotel to charge your card if you are a no show.

What makes you think that, in this instance, your card is more likely to be used without your consent, than on any other occasion that you use it? If you have had problems with this hotel before or you have a specific reason for not trusting them then don't book with them. Otherwise, your card has the same levels of protection in place with this booking as any other.

Nothing can stop it, but it won't cost you a penny if it does happen so I don't really understand why you would worry any more about it than giving your card to any other merchant.
