BA cancelled flight from verona

We were supposed to be flying home to gatwick from verona on Saturday 09/04 at 12pm. We got a text at about 2pm on Friday saying that our flight had been cancelled . they offered us the next available flight on Monday 11/04 at 10pm - 2 whole days later!!!
Me and my partner both had to be at work on Monday so we booked a flight with EasyJet on saturday at 5pm and requested a refund for our return flight from BA.
we later found out that the cancellation was due to a strike at the verona airport and therefore unforseen circumstances. It was also extremely annoying as we had to give our rental car back at verona airport at 10am and therefore had to spend the day at the airport.
Anyway, we complained to BA and they replied saying that we couldn't have compensation but could claim any expenses that we had incurred. Would it be reasonable to ask BA to cover the difference between the price of our return flight with them and the price of the Easyjet ticked that we had to buy?
thanks:mad:
