I have had a note through my door to say they want me to leave the property.Ive been a very long term tenant and I'm disgusted that they cant talk to me about it.
There was no reason given but it was on the official paper they use with notice given. My question is do they have to give a reason and did they do the right thing just putting it through the door are they not meant to hand it to you?

It is a formal notice, not a writ, so it can be put through the door.
Is this a section 21 notice? If so and your fixed term contract is reaching its end or has already expired then there needs to be no reason.
However, it is a tactic often used by letting agents to secure a renewal fee or in some cases a whole new tenant fee.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Assuming its a Section 21 notice with 2 months, then no reason is required.
It has to served, so through the letterbox is sufficient.0 -

When was last tenancy signed? Are there any reasons you think landlord might want you out (rent arrears?). Deposit paid, if so protected & you served with "prescribed information" within 30 days of you paying it?0 -
The notice may also not be valid if it is not for 2 months.
Simply saying we want you to leave by 1st May (for example), would not be sufficient0 -
long term is 20 years the notice says they want me to leave by june 15th. please tell what happens if I don't?:footie:0

So you definitely moved in before 27th feb 1997 ?
In which case do nothing, as you cannot be evicted for no reason (in fact it's going to be very hard to evict you at all)0 -
If you don't, they'll have to get a court order to get you evicted, which may take anything from a few weeks to a few months, until that comes, you don't have to go anywhere. ETA, above poster has pointed out this is different due to length of your tenancy, so listen to her/him.
I think it is pretty shoddy of them not to tell you in advance given the length of your tenancy - as soon as I knew I would be needing to sell the house in a few months' time I let my tenants of seven years know. But maybe if they have multiple properties they don't think in terms of individual tenants' circumstances. And no, they don't need to give you a reason, but it would have at least been civil to do so.0 -

Normally this is spot on, but it sounds like the OP doesn't have an AST, so the normal s.21 notices etc. wont apply. We need to confirm this with the OP. - it's very rare these days.0 -

If so, any s21 notice is probably invalid: Please confirm it was or was not a s21 notice.
