    I think people get locked into perceptions.

    My brother works in a very high powered, stressful, well paid job. He has done really well for himself and has won some work related awards. My mother still treats him like a simpleton.

    To that end, the are only in contact once a year. When he visits, she speaks to him as if he is about 5 and it becomes unbearable. I have spoken to her about it- all she says is 'he's my baby.' She can't see that he is over 6ft and runs his own life very efficiently. She is missing out on the man he has become.

    I suppose my point is that you either try and change their perception of you, or your girlfriend learns to let it go. I wish you all the best.
