Old cards - PPI

I'm interested in claiming PPI but I cant remember many details. I had a few credit cards and loans back in 2004 after uni but dont remember many of the details.
Would a PPI company be better at finding this information than I would and better chance of getting the money back, I had lots of different addresses over short times back then so will be quite a messy one?
I tried once before with egg but got rejected because they said I needed the PPI due to having no savings...

A PPI company will only find the information once you tell them who you had PPI with.
They're at the lower end of the value for money spectrum.0 -
I have a rough idea who they were with but dates and addresses would probably be an issue0 -

just spoke to a friend who was in a similar situation.
Company he used do all the searching for you and have come back with some money for him (a few thousand). They take 30% though.0 -

They take 30% though.
. . . and it's 30% +VAT!0 -

just checked - it's 25% plus vat
I know I could do all this myself however I tried once before on one client and got rejected. The reason they came back with was they said I didnt have any savings so if I lost my job I would have needed the PPI - I argued if I had savings I wouldn't have needed the credit card but still rejected.0 -
plus this sounds like me (from moneysavingexpert)
You wouldn’t bother doing it without. If you’re busy and know it’ll never happen otherwise, and are happy to pay a hefty 30%+ to get your cash back, then it’s a perfectly legitimate choice to decide to pay to get your mis-sold PPI money back0 -

In which case, the PPI company would also be rejected.0 -
