    I came close to buying one of their new homes in my area once. However the reviews significantly put me off, not to mention I discovered that the development was on a flood plane - gave me the impression they are an irresponsible developer.

    There are lots of complaints about big house builders out there, but I agree with the poster above who said Persimmon seem to be one of the worst. I've heard of houses having lots of snags and people finding it nearly impossible to get them sorted.

    I once remember reading a rating chart of developers based on awards won, customer feedback etc and I seem to remember Taylor Wimpey, Bellway and Barratt doing well with Persimmon doing poorly. May be worth googling, and investigating who is in charge of the actual building contract on the site - how highly are they regarded?
  • I moved into my persimmon house 6 weeks ago. I absolutely love it.
    Of course there are snags but I bet every new home does.
    I read many reviews before making my decision and yes, the negatives do put you off. But people are quick to speak up about the bad things but not so quick to praise the good.

    First of all, there's nothing wrong with timberframe. Both timber and block builds have their pro's and con's but from a technical (and safety) standpoint there's very little in it.

    Secondly, although the design of a new build has very much to do with the developer, the quality of fit and finish has very little to do with the company and more to do with the trades and labour and site manager on the individual site. Every builder uses local sub-contractors, the competence of which varies, so the level of and severity of snagging is down to them and the diligence of the site manager. It really is a bit of a lottery.

    What it really comes down is the quality of the materials and level of customer care. My profession is such that I speak to a wide variety of construction product suppliers on a daily basis and the general consensus is that the quality of things like kitchen units, joinery products (staircases, facings, doors etc) and architectural ironmongery is at the value end of the market.

    I have it on record from two different kitchen manufacturers that Persimmon and Barrat have a very low budget per plot when it comes to specifying kitchens. In fact they are the lowest in the industry by some margin.

    Having said all that, one of my friends is in a lovely Persimmon home which had very little in the way of snagging required and he's very happy with it.

    My advice is don't just speak to the sales office, get a meeting with the site manager before you reserve. If he fills you with confidence, happy days. If not, take your money elsewhere.
