Help Us Decide Whether To Fly To Austria Today-- Please

HI
Help needed please -- its you or toss a coin!!!

We have flights booked to Austria for 6 days on an early morning flight tomorrow from Stansted. Obviously we were looking forward to going as OH has just retired but we love walking and that was the main point of the holiday in beautiful scenery of course. However we would obvious;ly be able to spend time relaxing

This morning ( foolishly we feel now) we looked at the long range weather forecast near Salzburg. It is for heavy rain for the next 4 days.Opposed to beautiful weather here

Information you will need to help us decide.

Flights cost 1p plus taxes.
It will cost us £100 for B&B plus parking(no money incurred by pulling out although I feel a bit troubled morally)
Petrol money to Stansted Approx 500 mile round trip
£100 - rental which is refundable( cos the flat is a mates and she isn't going this week
Spending money

If we decide not to go we would be able to take our van to Cornwall camping in the predicted sunshine for a fraction of the costs. We have just retired and will be able to go to Austria again at another time

Right please think about it and say yeah to Austria or nay otherwise we will have to toss a coin:confused::confused::confused::confused:

Thank you:T :T :T

    My Vote:
You can't rely on the weather forecast but:

    Don't go.

If you're retired why not take your van to Austria (at a later date) and go camping there for a longer time (month?)

There's more to see than you can fit into 6 days!

I would definitely go, if you organise your life around weather forecasts, no-one would ever do anything! My view is - you never look back and remember the times you didn't do something, only the times you did!
  • I would go to and don't rely on the forecast. I went to Stuttgart in July and cancelled my campsite in favour of a hotel because of the forecast. The sun shone every day!!!

Salzburg is really beautiful as well!!

Heavy rain for 4 days doesn't (I hope.....) literally mean that it will rain for 4 days non-stop. It normally means there will at intervals be heavy rain lasting an hour or so at a time.

    I think I'd still go.

I'd go. 4 days anywhere but here is a bonus.

It's what you make of it. New people, new places, new food, new sights, all the joys of travelling. The rain couldn't ruin that! And it won't rain 24 hours a day.

    Read the OP scenario

As this is a moneysaving site

They could save money and have a relaxing UK break

They could then plan a longer sojourn (they are retired...)to Austria\Southern Germany\Italy\Switzerland camping using their van ( I assume they mean caravan).

Which would be a better moneysaving idea than flying out for 6 days.

If people want to save money, they shouldn't go on holiday it would save them a fortune. They are not losing money because it's raining, and wouldn't gain money if it was sunny. They would still lose out on their taxes. And time spent planning the trip. And obviously the 'moral dilemma' faced in cancelling their friends flat.

The point I was making is that they shouldn't necessarily be 100% guided by weather. They will have reasons for booking to Salzburg in the first place, and I bet it wasn't to sunbathe.

2 days rain / 2 days non-rain. Then possibly some sun. They won't necessarily lose out on their experiences, just plan a bit better. Maybe do the museums at first?

To subquote - 'Rainy Days are common in Salzburg' http://www.wordtravels.com/Cities/Austria/Salzburg/Climate especially May - September.

If only you'd have actually read their post!

They are retired so technically they are not going on 'holiday' but travelling to broaden the mind etc.

In order to let them enjoy a wealthier retirement I'd say ditch this expensive trip as my comments above.
And time spent planning the trip
Hopefully they have plenty of that!

Apart from that your 'advice' was spot on :D
