I moved house mid March and the house has no water meter. the bill is horrific at £1300 per year (My old house had a meter and we pay around £400/year). I contacted the water company before the move asking for a water meter to be fitted in the new house and they arranged for their engineer to attend on the first working day after the move(We moved Friday and he came on Monday). Unfortunately he found that the meter needs to be fitted in a manhole just at the front drive and as result they will need to come back in Mid May to do the job.
I contacted the water company and they said they can not do any thing about it and will charge me the rateble value for March and April (Just over £200). I complained about that as my last bill in the old house (only a mile away and served by the same water company) was £215 for 7 months but they said they cant do any thing even though they admitted that it is not my fault that they cant fit the meter sooner. Can I do any thing????

Ask to go on assessed charges which is how they charge were they can't fit a meter.

if they are within levels of service don't think there is anything you can do, annual bills go out in April so busiest time of year, i guess you will have to wait your turn, and depending on where you live the road may be traffic sensitive and may not be allowed to dig up the road until council give permission

I too was going to suggest that you write complaining and asking for either an assessed charge until they fit the meter or an earlier completion date.

thanks guys...considering it is only 3 weeks left before the meter is fitted, shall I wait and negotiate the charge for the 2 months before the meter after that? They promised to sort it out afterwards and put a note on their computers (confirmed by 3 people)

Sorting it out afterwards make sense as you can take take reading's and see what allowance if any they will give you

As long as you get it in writing beforehand that is what they'll do that would seem fair to me
