Cancelling Sky Broadband, move to BT

Options
Last year I cancelled my sky phone and broadband, intending to move to Virgin. I ended up staying with sky as they called a week into the notice period with a retention deal.

A year on, I've put notice in to Sky again, this time two weeks in and no retention deal.

I'm now thinking of moving to BT. As sky is due to switch off in two weeks time am I best reinstating the sky first, then arranging for BT to take over the service?

Yes. If you cancel and then sign up with a different provider, you could be waiting a couple of weeks to get your phone and internet connection back up and running. Much simpler to do a transfer.

What do you mean reinstating Sky ?, you need to be careful that you don't enter into a new minimum term with Sky, if you give them a months notice, and are 2 weeks into that notice period, ( after completing the previous minimum term) and you need more than 2 weeks to arrange a new provider, I would check that if you cancel the current notice you would only have to provide another month notice when you do leave, they may put you on a 12 month contract when you call to say 'cancel my notice to quit'
TBH l I would have thought 2 weeks plenty for another provider to take over your line and broadband, it's only a little work in your exchange that's required ( and possibly a little work in the fibre cab, if you have FTTC broadband)

Did you actually ask for a retention deal ?

I cancelledtv, refusing any offers, then called about phone/bb two weeks later and got free broadband and half price line . This should have been £9.99 line, but as a cs person messed up (reinstating only bb), I was given a better offer.

I booked BT last week and the earliest I could get was less than 2 weeks, so you should be ok if you are quick.
  • I cancelled the Sky TV last week & have had no offers put on my page. I have now decided to go the whole quit-Sky hog & have just now signed up for the Plusnet £16.99 per month with free unlimited broadband for 12 months plus £50 cashback deal which ends tomorrow. We'll do Freeview for a while & see how we get on with that as I'm no longer prepared to pay the best part of £500 per year for TV that we simply don't watch enough of to justify.

Anyhoo, should I inform Sky myself that we're leaving or is it automatically part of the switching process as it is with gas/electric. I don't want to be paying Sky any more than I have to.

    Thanks.

It should be part of the switching process, mine was with BT. A few hours after signing up to BT, I got a "sorry you're leaving" e-mail from Sky.

No offers though. The only thing when I log into MySky was to get Kung Fu Panda buy and keep!

If you just cancel, you'll most likely be stuck with a disconnection fee from Openreach

If you are only switching BB with another supplier then you need to cancel with an minimum 14 day notice as the supplier will not contact Sky. I was told this on different occasion by separate Sky advisors.

If however, you are also switching line rental then the gaining supplier will send Sky the active line take over request so you never have to speak to Sky.

The 14 day notice for a new supplier for bb only would be covered by the 14 day cooling off period.

ie If you sign up with a new provider who will provide bb on your phoneline, then they will contact sky immediately you sign up, but the takeover won't take place till at least 14 days have passed.
  • I am confused as to why Sky has an offer to upgrade to Sky Fibre Unlimited for new customers was unwilling to match that offer to me- an existing customer!

I ended up switching to BT Infinity for pretty much the same price that Sky was offering new customers. I thought haggling was supposed to be easy! Instead I called their bluff- and am likely to be changing providers in 2 weeks.
