For me its just another option.
I normally prefer "non chain" places as I prefer to benefit the community im going to rather than some big corporate. however if a Hilton comes up and it fits the bill, Id book it, no hassle.

I agree it's another option but certainly one worth exploring from an MSE viewpoint both as a guest and possibly as a host as a way to make money. I am quite surprised there's so little about it on the forums as it certainly fits the MSE ethos.

    It sensible to be cautious...

...and there's plenty of other cautionary tales on the internet.

I mentioned earlier in the thread that we are staying in an Airbnb advertised property as soon when we arrive in Nicaragua. I've got the place cheaper by contacting the owner direct, and avoided the charges that Airbnb levy.

I could have got much better in Bali too had I made a little more effort and covered hotel room in my budget. We visited off-season so with an over supply of hotel rooms we could had the pick of many a bargain.

I think that once you've decided on a destination, the first stop when considering accommodation is the relevant Trip Advisor forum, and search the threads mentioning Airbnb. They'll give an idea of whether they're worth it for that particular destination. Then check Booking.com for example, as many owners want to advertise as widely as possible and so many Airbnb properties also appear on Booking.com and the like.

How can Airbnb be in any way moneysaving?

The number of spam posts they have had removed on here is staggering - for that reason allone they should be avoided on principle.

Then their is their claim to be able to sell you rooms in the past - Which is I think still preserved on a thread here!

    Sharks and nothing more! :(

I think it's fairly clear how.
I've never seen Airbnb posts on here although I've seen the odd post from individuals renting out their property......which is not the same thing as Airbnb posting. By your reasoning EBay should be avoided on principle too as not every EBay seller is 100%. Is that seriously what you mean?

They tended to get deleted very quickly and I've not seen any for a while, so maybe they gave-up? Either way, once a spammer....!

Individuals posting their referrals here are maybe even worse - They are mostly going completely against MSE rules and their service agreement with Airbnb which means anyone stupid enough to use them could be on very thin ice if there are problems.
