What's the Parking (P) mode for an Toyota Auris automatic?

Just bought myself a used automatic car. I have a problem with it. It will not move at night. No matter how much i press the accelerator it will not move. Yes the handbrake is off. In the daytime it works perfectly.
I think the gearbox is faulty. I will explain.....
In the daytime i get in the car, start it up and select D for daytime mode, handbrake off and move off.
At night i do the same as above but put the gear into N for night mode but the car will not move.
One day a boy racer challenged me at traffic lights so i put the gear into R for race mode. The car went backwards and crashed into the car behind me.
Am i right in assuming the gearbox is faulty?
Yes the above is a joke but i have come across some people who drive an auto without knowing how to drive it or without reading the manual. Few never knew about kickdown.Problem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problemsWell at least i learn something on the way

I had one of these. I had been driving for a while. I came home and reversed into my drive (which slopes down hill). I parked in Neutral and half an hour later my son came in to tell me the car had rolled back and hit the house. Turns out because I had been driving for a while the brakes had warmed up once parked they cooled down and with being in neutral this allowed the car to slide. Always park it in gear.0

Does any automated manual box come with a park facility, can't recall ever seeing one, even on that fancy BMW thingy, the model of which one dare not mention in case our resident PITA kicks off...do twin clutch boxes come with P on that front, they are something i have avoided like the plague and will continue to do so.0

I tried to race this driver by putting mine in "R" but I went backwards.0

The confusion here is that (in the UK) the Toyota Auris is not available with an automatic gearbox so in my mind it's wrong to talk about an Auris automatic.
Or any other Toyota in Europe I think.
The clue is in the name - MMT - Multimode Manual Transmission!
What is has is or rather hasn't got is a clutch pedal.
It's a manual gearbox with an electric clutch.
So there cannot be a P (Park) mode which locks the transmission.
So if parking facing downhill you leave it in Reverse.
And obviously if parking facing uphill you would leave it in E.
On the level you can please yourself which mode.
I'm sure that all this is explained in the Manual - so either not reading it or not understanding it is going to mean that driving it could be 'fun'.
Let's not forget the Auris Hybrid which has the same engine and box as the Prius. Probably has the same strange gear selector aswell!0 -
I would agree - I haven't seen any sequential manual auto-box with a P position either.
That's not to say that one doesn't exist - just that I am not (yet) aware of one.
I currently have a fully automatic 8-speed auto which automatically selects Park when you either stop the engine or push the P button on the selector.
You don't actually move the selector itself - just touch the button.
But the Fiesta, B Max, Focus, Mondeo, Galaxy and V50/S40 Powershifts have a park facility, in fact the gear selector in the Fords is the same as the TC Autos, some had Powershift written on the top.
And a Passat I drive back in 08 had Park aswell.
My Jag had Park but Park would also be automatically selected when you switched off, I think that was the same in all JLR vehicles with the rotary gear selector.
But how many cars have a little button beside the gear selector that allows the vehicle to be removed from Park with a flat battery?
I know Subarus used to and I know for a fact Jaguars don't, if you get a flat battery you need a booster pack attached to get it out of Park!0 -
Landcruiser auto gearlevers will shift whatever the situation with ignition on/off, untouched brake etc, no little button to press.0
