Hi all,

What is the default parking mode for Toyota Auris automatic?

My car has R, N, E, and M modes.

Similar to this example:

Usually with automatic there is a P option for parking but this doesn't have it.

How do I put it in a parking mode?

I read the manual but there was no real indication except use the handbreak.

(Probably) all you need to know about the Toyota MMT gearbox:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multimode_manual_transmission

"Parking: Unlike an automatic car, the P gear is absent in a MMT car. The car should be parked in the following fashion. In an up-slopping incline, put the gear to M1, or E, apply handbrake, and switch off the engine. In a down-slopping incline, put the gear to R, apply handbrake, and switch off the engine. On level ground, put the gear to R, apply handbrake, and switch off the engine. R or E/M1 substitute the P function in a full automatic"

You seem to be having a few issues getting to grips with your car. Maybe a good time to RTFM ;)

The confusion here is that (in the UK) the Toyota Auris is not available with an automatic gearbox so in my mind it's wrong to talk about an Auris automatic.

Or any other Toyota in Europe I think.

The clue is in the name - MMT - Multimode Manual Transmission!

What is has is or rather hasn't got is a clutch pedal.

It's a manual gearbox with an electric clutch.

So there cannot be a P (Park) mode which locks the transmission.

So if parking facing downhill you leave it in Reverse.

And obviously if parking facing uphill you would leave it in E.

On the level you can please yourself which mode.

I'm sure that all this is explained in the Manual - so either not reading it or not understanding it is going to mean that driving it could be 'fun'.

    That doesn't Matter.

Oh, so I'm not the only one who's listened to that 'hilarious' 'real' customer service call then?

Seriously, haven't you got something better to do?
  • It should be remembered that this is the pre 2012 Auris interior shot, next gen 2012 on Auris got Toyotas CVT box, which does have a normal auto gear selector with a Park segment.

Does any automated manual box come with a park facility, can't recall ever seeing one, even on that fancy BMW thingy, the model of which one dare not mention in case our resident PITA kicks off...do twin clutch boxes come with P on that front, they are something i have avoided like the plague and will continue to do so.

    I would agree - I haven't seen any sequential manual auto-box with a P position either.

That's not to say that one doesn't exist - just that I am not (yet) aware of one.

I currently have a fully automatic 8-speed auto which automatically selects Park when you either stop the engine or push the P button on the selector.

You don't actually move the selector itself - just touch the button.
