Being force to renew tenancy for 6 months?

As usual on this forum, members are jumping to conclusions, and being very aggressive to an everyday occurence.

Please do not ignore the agent. They are probably doing the job that they are paid to do.

If you are looking for a property, you certainly won't be moving anytime soon. Why not suggest a 3 month fixed term due to your circumstances?

Because they are being quite forceful in pushing a 6 or 12 month contract on us that we don't want or need. On top of that there's a contract fee which we'd be charged for signing their contract that we don't want and aren't required to sign.

Agreeing to a 3 month contract seems pointless when we can just continue as we are. There isn't a need or requirement to sign.

On top of all the above, the manner in which the estate agent is conducting itself is questionable. Constant phone calls when they know we work shifts, saying we must sign before the end of our existing contract and getting upset that we aren't just isn't professional or reasonable. It may also be considered as harassment if it continues.

I'm trying to be reasonable here. I will fulfill my end of the relationship between us and the estate agent by always paying on time as we have done so far and by looking after the property.

The estate agents appears to be intent on making a quick couple of hundred pounds from us for merely copy and pasting our names on to a contract template when there's no need in the first place.

I don't think you're under any obligation at all to tell them why you want to have a rolling tenancy. You signed a 6 month AST and you're entitled to those terms.

In my opinion, by and large tenants should never do something or not do something (within reason) 'because the landlord might evict us', because they probably won't. Most landlords only have the one property and have a day job, so finding a new tenant and possibly having voids are fusses they could do without.

Why though? why is it up to OP to suggest a compromise at all?

    It's called being an adult.
I don't "have" to do anything at all, but I do so because it's the right thing to do.

It's nice to be nice. :A

That's different to my experience. In our last property we had a letter from the agent, purportedly acting on the landlady's instructions, saying we needed to sign a new contract or make arrangements for our departure. Which was odd, as last time we had spoken to her she was quite happy with a rolling contract as she didn't want to pay the agent any further fees. As she lived next door, I popped round to check. She hadn't heard anything from them, much less given them any instructions. This was just one of a string of lies Mann and Co were caught out in during our dealings with them.
