I've had it with my garmin nuvi 50. It's incredibly dumb and slow.
For ages it didn't inform me that I could use the free woolwich ferry to get from north side to south side and instead taken me through blackwall (slow) or dartford (takes age and is a huge segue).
Additionally if I miss a turn it cannot intelligent reroute me, instead asks that I do an immediate uturn and get back on its course.
Lastly it's outdated, doesn't have some newbuild postcodes and new one way systems.
So I'm interested in a new intelligent satnav that has lifetime map updates and preferable as responsive as a tablet.
Geeky solutions welcome, solutions that can take a cheap android tablet and turn it into a fully fledged navigation system.

Just get whatever TomTom you can find with lifetime updates.0

Happy with drive+ on windows phone includes world wide maps
would not buy another standalone satnav just put the money into a phone more flexible in and out of the vehicle.
if you already have a decent phone get a decent app for it.
with some solutions you will get the live traffic data based routing.0 -

In technology terms your Garmin 50 is ancient, not helped by the fact you havent had any map updates.
For a budget unit, i'd go for the 55LMT - several iterations better than yours, free lifetime maps and traffic updates. (I've one!)

Stepping up from that, you're into something like this

Waze, The Nav you get with iPhones and Google Nav.
I don't see the point in paying for SatNav anymore.0 -

There are various reasons i still do.- They're incredibly cheap now. My Garmin cost me £69 and that was UK & Europe with lifetime map updates
- I like my sat nav on on every journey so i dont have to fiddle getting the phone into the cradle every time i get in to the car then remember to fiddle with the cradle to get it back out again every time i leave the car
- I've the wiring routed neatly (and 95% hidden) and i never need to go looking for it to plug it in as its always plugged in
- It sits neatly in the corner of the dash and i never have to tweak its angle or touch the cradle.
- It comes on when I start the car and goes off when i leave the car with no intervention from me
- I dont mount my phone on my dash / windscreen, nor do i want to
- I dont want to drain my phone battery
- I dont want to "lock" my phone into satnav mode when i may otherwise want to (stop and) use it.
- When i go on foreign hols, i take the sat nav with me and stick it in the hire car - without having to switch on costly data usage which i would on my mobile.

Windows drive+
Don't need to lock into satnav still works as a phone at the same time.
Maps are stored on the phone no data required unless you want live traffic info.0 -

Well that's 2 of the 9 points covered.
What if you don't have a smart phone.0 -
I just use an old smart phone. A nexus 4 in my case. Cheap, and works well.
I use a three 321 SIM, and top it up every 2-3 months.0
