Is it best to list your house forsale before looking at homes on rightmove? . Or look around at homes then list your home forsale once you have found one?

Yes. Offers we made on a house we liked were rejected by the owner due to our house not yet being marketed and then sold.0

We didn't even start looking until our house was under offer, we knew roughly the area we wanted to move to though, and likewise we wouldnt even entertain having anyone to view whose house wasn't at least under offer either, its totally pointless, I'd hate to see something I loved, set my heart on it and then not sell my home in time to be able to offer on itAug GC £63.23/£200, Total Savings £00

Depends on the area. If it's a seller's market, find the place you want first. If it's a buyer's market, sell yours first.0

There's really no right way to do this. If everybody waited to find a new house before putting theirs up for sale no houses would ever come to market! But if you are looking for something specific which is rare then your buyer could be hanging around for months while you search. But then when you find, as others have said, you need to be in a position to buy. Have you had a few valuations done? You need to get a good idea of what your house is worth before you even look, to know your budget!0

As the others have said.
I know for example, that when I come to put mine on the market, it's in a highly desirable area and will have lots of interest. This together with me looking in a highly desirable area means it only makes sense to put mine on the market once I've found somewhere. It could take ages for me to find something.0 -
We decided to put our house on the market.
Got 3 local agents to come round and value property.
One offered to sell house for 1% fee.
Last estate agent seemed just so keen to get business that he said he would match 1% fee.
Board went up thursday evening and viewing friday afternoon, house sold on saturday.
5 days later we had viewed about 10 houses and found the ONE and third offer accepted.
Estate agents got a nice fat cheque and did not even draw up property details as couple so keen to buy our house ( quite area with downstairs bedroom+en-suite).

We only marketed our property because of a house we viewed that we loved (weren't even planning on moving).
I negotiated an acceptable buy price whilst we marketed our property so i had that bit locked down the moment we got an offer.
Timeline:-
1. Viewed house on Monday
2. Downselected EA on Wednesday and property was marketed by Friday. One viewing Saturday (open day was planned for following Saturday but this one guy was desperate).
3. Offer came on Tuesday. Refused it and refused a second offer.
4. Third offer on Wednesday met asking price - accepted and told 14 other potential buyers booked for the open day that it was withdrawn.
5. Phone EA of the house we viewed and stated we had a buyer and my offer stands.
6. Offer accepted that evening.
Currently going through conveyancing process.
Unless you've got an offer on your house then nobody is going to accept your offer on their house as you might not be in a position to move forward for a good while.0
