My Acer laptop power socket is a fairly easy DIY replacement item, the socket is on a short lead that plugs into the motherboard so can be replaced without unsoldering the old socket.

Yours also seems to be, a replacement for £6 from Amazon should sort it out, assuming you're happy to dismantle the laptop - online videos and guides show you how.

Here's a video how to dismantle it..... it's not hard assuming you're reasonably DIY competant and have a small screwdriver or two. Important to note which screw goes into which hole as the lengths vary!

And therein lies the problem!!!! :o:o

I have treated myself to a 'new' laptop - once I've transferred all the data, I will then be tempted to try the repair - can then give it to MrsB .... the last one I handed down to her (that I'm using currently) is rather tired! :D

It sounds like the charging socket its self has come away from the motherboard slightly.
This is a common fault on a lot of laptops, especially if the cord has been "ripped" out of the back a few times (kids running past etc) ..

Your local IT shop may be able to re-run the solder but ultimately a new motherboard would be a permanent fix

Actually it's usually caused by people using them on their laps or on soft surfaces, which applies unintentional force on the power jack, as this usually lands first.

Again, originally they were "portable computers", but marketing folk called them "laptop" and this has lead to people wrongly thinking a) they're for use on your lap and b) the "power supply" is a "charger".
