I would buy a scanner, and a printer without a scan function.....yes it's more real estate on the desk, but scanners can be put aside unless you use it daily. Inkjets unless use daily do dry up and thus waste ink on the cleaning cycle. Not the most money saving advice I realise but my scanner is getting on for 9 years old works with XP/Vista/W7/W10 and Linux, it doesn't stop working if my printer is snafu'd. I would also recommend a b/w laser for a printer for every day use and either print your colour pics at the nearest Supermarket/(Pronta/Vista/Other photoshop)print or buy an Inkjet if you wish to have total control on you coloured pics. If you don't print photos but need colour for reports/boarding passes etc then a cheap colour laser is your man. MFPs are more likely to contribute to landfill/recycling than separates.

...............Can you imagine the outcry if a car manufacturer said that their warranty would be invalidated unless you buy their own brand of petrol at £15.00 a litre?

There would be no outcry if it were an Apple car, there would also be lengthy explanations as to why it was *obviously* better in the long run to pay £15/litre. :D:p:)
    Move along, nothing to see.

There was outcry (from me at least) when the apple "fuel" in my pub went up to £4.10 / pint circa 7.35 per litre, still I don't have to use iTunes , just a glass

evening spud (I expect richie-from-the-boro will come along soon saying I am paying too much for my aspalls)

If it's only for printing vouchers, boarding cards, etc rather then colour pictures, then a black and white Samsung or Brother laser printer is the way to go. 3000+ pages from a compatible toner for less than £10 and it never dries out.

You need to be a bit careful when you select a laser product. Some of these products do have multiple components that need periodic replacement.

Many years back I remember inheriting a Xerox laser printer that required many replaceable parts and all were costly, ie each toner colour, developer, photoreceptor, fuser, waste toner container.

Generally speaking for low use mono/colour I think that inkjets are probably lowest on cost. Certainly that has been the case for me with the Brother DCP 3040CW.
