Speeding offence but I wasn't the driver. Advice?

Car was sold on Sunday, all paperwork complete & sent off.

The driver must've thought they could get away with seeing what it could do as they've been caught speeding in the early hours of the morning.

I now have a form through & section B gives 2 options. I can say I was the driver (not true) or that I was not the driver.

The problem is, for saying I wasn't the driver, it wants me to fill in who I believe the driver was.

Well I don't know his details.

What should I do in this case? Write through the boxes that they should refer to the V5C that'll be making its way to the DVLA? Attach a note to the form to explain the car was sold only hours earlier?

I'm sure this happens a lot, but it's the first time to me.

Next time you sell a car put the exact time of the transaction on the docs and get the purchaser to sign his agreement to it.

(How come you don't know the purchaser's details??)

How come you don't know the details of the new owner, did you not complete the new keeper details when you sold the car?

Either way the best thing you can do is just send a cover letter informing them when you sold the car.

Shouldn't be a problem, they'll check in a week or so and it should have a new keeper. Failing that if there's insurance on the vehicle the have someone to chase.
  • Joe Bloggs telephones & says I saw your car advertised, I'm interested in it, can I come round?
    Yes no problem.
Joe Bloggs decides to buy it.
Sign up the paperwork. Stick paperwork in an envelope & post off.

And you're saying I'm supposed to remember this persons details who I've never met before?

At any rate, that doesn't help with the situation at hand.

Thanks neilmcl, i'll send a cover letter. I was thinking that was the best approach.

Simple hing to do would be to tell the DVLA he's no longer the keeper if he doesn't get their letter saying he has no concern in the vehicle.

The new owner sends off their new keepers bit. I've had to do that in the past when the owner of the car either didn't send off or it got lost in the post - I sent off the new keepers bit & x-weeks later I got the V5C.

I got the feeling a few posts back but i'll say it now - if you're suggesting I should take their fingerprints & get DNA samples (since we seem to be being sarcastic here) then I've never had to do this, I've never known anyone do this, I was once a member of a car club & nobody I knew there ever did that. Another one of those times where I suppose only people on the internet do it.

And slightly off topic, but when one of my parents died, the other wrote off to the DVLA, just said the owner had died & they were taking ownership.
No checks, no nothing. Paperwork through a few week later. Didn't seem difficult at all, even though it could've all been a lie.

you are assuming they get the letter

if not then do you suggest he commits perjury with something like

dear dvla further to my letter telling you i have no idea who i sold the car to please fill your records in with the following details
    briar rabbet
    c/o the bunny hole
    10 acre field wiltshire

on a further note OP you have cancelled your insurance i hope but then again of course you have
