Trainers falling apart after 6 months

Bought a pair of trainers from Sports Direct. 6 months later, the soles have fallen apart, with massive rips in the rubber, letting water through whenever I go out in the rain! Is 6 months an acceptable amount of time for this to happen? I've had trainers before that have lasted 2 years. I've had trouble with Sports Direct before when trying to return defective items, so want to get an idea of whether people consider this acceptable wear and tear before I go in.

Thanks

When exactly did you buy them? Over 6 months or under? 6 months is important.

You'll always have a chew with sports direct but if you bought them under 6 months ago they have to prove that you damaged them rather than being bought inherently faulty. You have rights under the SOGA still (don't think you're in CCR time)

If they're over 6 months it will probably be difficult.
  • 5th Oct, so 6 months and 1 day, dammit!!!

No idea whether six months is acceptable or not, because you have given us no indication of the quality of the goods purchased.

But that doesn't matter too much anyway.

After six months from purchase the seller has every right to ask you to prove that the goods were faulty at the time of sale, and knowing SD's reputation, that is exactly what they will do.

Until you have proved that the trainers have an inherent fault, the seller has to do nothing.

Once you have proved that, the seller must provide a remedy, which could be a replacement, repair or refund.
I would expect the seller to choose a refund as a remedy.
A refund can be reduced to take account of the use you have had.

So we're back to the price paid.
If say, you paid £10 for a pair of trainers, their life expectancy might be six months.
So a refund reduced to take account of the use you have had might be £0.00.

I'll leave you to do the sums about your trainers.

It also depends on how much you've worn them and in what conditions, you say they are letting in water when it rains but were they sold as waterproof/water resistant? Have you just worn them for every day use or have you been running daily training for a marathon? Have they been worn on a beach or walking through mud?

6 months for a pair of trainer is good going, take them back and they will just laugh at you.

6 month rule is not important here. I go through a pair of trainers every 2-3 months just by normal wear and tear, usually running so taking back a pair with the sole wore down to nothing isn't going to get you anywhere regardless of when they were bought.
  • Well this is them after 6 months. I wore them while travelling, I'm just surprised as previous trainers I've bought for the same price from Sports Direct have lasted years and years. Even 'Gelert', the trainer manufacturers, seemed surprised that the trainers were in that state.

Think I'll just cut my losses, buy a new pair of the old brand I use. Life's too short to fight every battle!

You used them to travel for 6 months? I'd personally consider 6 months' use for extensive outdoor travelling to be somewhat reasonable!

By the looks of the pictures you may have just caught a stone or something, causing a small tear which has stretched out a lot.

I certainly wouldn't be bothered here! Life is too short (as hopefully you found out whilst travelling) to kick off over a crappy pair of trainers which have served their purpose....

Gelert are yet another brand owned by Sports Direct and manufactureed to a very low price. I'd say 6 months is probably more than you can expect them to last, definitely so if worn every day or thereabouts.
