The EE contract is finished so the phone has no signal, how would it get unlocked please?Too many children, too little time!!!

What do you mean by 'finished'?
It doesn't finish unless you proactively terminate it.
Generally, you should/could have got it unlocked while you were a EE customer. If you aren't anymore, apparently you still can get it unlocked via a EE shop: http://ee.co.uk/help/getting-started/joining-ee/unlocking-your-device0
