Explorer needs updating from 9 to 11 on Windows Vista

I have Windows Vista. I have Explorer 9. When on a website to book tickets the other day I got a message to say my browser does not support the page. It gave me a link to see what browser I have. It showed me I have Explorer 9 and it said Explorer 11 was the current one but wouldn't let me install Explorer 11. Do I need a complete new operating system to be able to have a more up to date browser?
Many thanks.

    As above.
Internet Explorer 9 is the latest version which you can install on Windows Vista, and IE9 still supported by Microsoft on Vista (but not later versions of Windows). You can't upgrade it further without upgrading the OS, so will need to use Firefox/ Chrome etc. for this particular website.

Use Firefox or Chrome like normal people :)

The issue with Vista is that it was crap to start with and got replaced very quickly with windows 7. MS would prefer that people forgot about vista..

I would totally ignore IE on vista I have recently come across a Vista pc which was infected with various ransomware viruses and too many other varieties of malware, despite having up to date avast, sadly there is no antivirus solution for the left click finger:mad:

Chrome is no longer supported on Vista.
Chrome Blog Tuesday, November 10, 2015
Today, we’re announcing the end of Chrome’s support for Windows XP, as well as Windows Vista, and Mac OS X 10.6, 10.7, and 10.8, since these platforms are no longer actively supported by Microsoft and Apple. Starting April 2016, Chrome will continue to function on these platforms but will no longer receive updates and security fixes.

I have just installed Firefox on an old Dell/Vista laptop and it's fine.

My laptop is Vista Ultimate and I use Chrome satisfactorily. I'm aware that each time I start, a notice tells me that in the near future "will not be supported" etc (can't remember the exact words), but when that goes, will my machine stop?, I assume not.

Other than that, what am I or anyone else for that matter expected to do?.

I suppose I will continue surfing for as long as possible and if one day things grind to a halt, then no doubt I will replace the laptop. Before Windows 10 was released, I was thinking about replacing this Vista machine, but after the release of 10, much was written about things not going too well, that I pulled back. So really, for anyone thinking of buying something new, it's a bit of a headache knowing which system to go for.

  • I have been on Vista for about 5 years and for me it's fine.

I ditched IE9 because it continually asks about its ad-ons and takes ages to load. I ditched FF because of its constant 'firefox isn't responding' or 'the firefox plugin has stopped responding'. I don't use Chrome because it always forgets my home page and insists on using its own. I now use Slimjet, a slimmed down version of Chrome, and it's great.

and this pendragon is what it's all about I think. If it works for you and gives little or no stress, then go along with it. There are bound to be well-meaning people saying "yes, it but it could be better" and no doubt they are right. But if you happen to be one of those people that is less adventurous, then why not stay with the devil you know/.

Vista was replaced by Windows 7 on schedule. It was not replaced early. Three years after Vista came out Win7 came out. Three years after Win7 came Win8. Three years later Win10. All on Microsoft's announced schedule.

Vista itself wasn't that bad, especially after service pack 1. Windows 7 was only a mild tweak of Vista really. The issues with Vista were due to companies not getting suitable drivers ready (which is not MS fault) in time as Vista had a new driver system and computer makers supplying new computers with Vista at launch that were too underpowered to run Vista well. These early issues tarnished Vista for ever.
